Proper installation of deflectors on a car with your own hands

Before installing the windshields, remove oils, greases, and fats from the body. Water will not cope with this, special cleansers will be required.

Installing window deflectors on a car lasts no longer than 10-15 minutes. The design does not allow water to get inside during rain, protects from gravel and sand. Windshields are mounted on the side and windshields, sunroof, hood of the car.

Preparing for installation

Deflectors are glued only on a clean surface. Wash the car and wipe with a solvent the planned place of fastening of the windshields. Especially carefully clean the body polished with wax or paraffin.

What will you need?

To install the visor on the car, you will need a building hair dryer, solvent, and a soft cloth. Almost all modern models have an adhesive strip, so installation is quick. Otherwise, you will have to buy a special double-sided tape.

How to remove glue residue and old deflectors

Open the car door and heat the deflector mounting area with a building hair dryer until its edge begins to move away. If you overdo it, the varnish will bubble, may peel off and you will have to repaint the body.

Carefully pry off the windshield with a clerical knife, insert the fishing line and slowly pull it towards you. If the design does not come off, warm it up again with a hairdryer. Moisten a cloth with solvent and wipe the body.

Installing window deflectors

Before replacing the deflector, remove the adhesive from the previous product from the surface of the machine. Attach the toffee rubber circle tip to the drill and gently wipe the door frame. Don't press too hard to avoid scratching. Then treat the area with anti-glue.

There is another way. Apply Khors silicone lubricant to the surface. After 20 minutes, wipe the body with a soft cloth.

How to degrease the surface

Before installing the windshields, remove oils, greases, and fats from the body. Water will not cope with this, special cleansers will be required. You can degrease the surface with vodka or water with the addition of ammonia. White spirit will also work. Do not use acetone or petrol, they will damage the paint surface.

Step-by-step process for attaching deflectors

Auto service employees will quickly glue the windshields to the Hyundai Creta, Toyota and any other car. But you have to pay them a lot of money. Let's figure out how to stick a window deflector on a car yourself.

Mounting options (with and without adhesive)

Deflectors are installed with adhesive tape or clips. Before buying, check the installation method. For example, products without any fasteners are suitable for cars of the LADA model range.

For side windows

Before installing the deflector on the side window of a car, attach it to the surface and accurately determine the attachment points. The instructions for mounting on adhesive tape are as follows:

  1. Degrease the door frame with solvent or the cloth that comes with the kit.
  2. Remove 3-4 cm of the protective strip from both sides of the deflector, lift its ends and attach to the installation site.
  3. Remove the remaining film from the adhesive strip and press the windshield fully against the door frame.
  4. Hold the design for several minutes. Then glue the windscreens to the other windows of the car in the same way.

Manufacturers of original deflectors use high-quality adhesives. On Chinese fakes, the adhesive strip may fall off or partially not attach to the surface. In this case, use double-sided mounting tape. Cut it into strips of the desired size. Fasten one side to the structure, and the other to the door frame.

After installing the deflectors, be sure to warm them up with a hairdryer so that the glue grabs faster. Or don't use the car for at least a day. If moisture gets on the surface, the structure will peel off.

Installing deflectors on the side windows

Pour colorless silicone sealant into the space between the windshield and the door frame. The design will hold tighter, and the adhesive tape will not get wet from moisture.

Now consider the instructions for installing wind deflectors without mounting:

  1. Lower the side glass, use a clerical knife to pry and move the seal in the place of the planned attachment of the deflector.
  2. Attach the structure to the window frame, pre-treating it with anti-corrosion grease.
  3. Bend the visor in the middle and install it in the gap between the seal and the door edge.
  4. Raise and lower the glass again.

A correctly installed deflector will remain in place.

On the windshield

There are 2 ways to mount deflectors on the windshield of a car. Consider the option recommended by product manufacturers:

  1. Degrease the installation site with a cloth soaked in alcohol and wait a couple of minutes for the substance to evaporate.
  2. Remove 10 cm of film from the windshield and fasten it slowly to the window, gradually removing the protective tape.
Do not glue the structure to the seal, as some manufacturers advise. Otherwise, there is a risk of severe damage to the surface of the body. In this case, you will have to paint the car.

Installing deflectors on the windshield

Now about another way to install the visor on the windshield. In addition to the part itself, you will need double-sided tape, crepe tape, Madeleine sealant with an adhesive layer. Follow the following installation sequence:

  1. Apply crepe tape around the edge of the windshield.
  2. Remove and set aside the side trim.
  3. Step back a millimeter from the crepe tape, then stick the double-sided tape.
  4. Remove the adhesive strip from the windshield, attach it to the adhesive tape.
  5. Cut out a strip of Madeleine tape, stick it over the deflector, but do not press it tightly against the top of the windshield.
  6. Put the side trim on the tape and fix it with bolts.
  7. Remove crepe tape.
The installation of the deflector on the windshield always starts from the bottom.

At the car hatch

Roof deflectors are designed for cars with sunroofs. Before installation, be sure to check its size.

Installation of deflectors on the sunroof of a car

Installation instructions include 5 steps:

  1. Open the hatch and degrease the intended area for installing the deflector.
  2. Attach the design and make marks on the roof with a pencil.
  3. Remove the protective film from the deflector, screw in the screws and fasten the brackets.
  4. Stick the adhesive tape in the attachment points so that it bends and grabs the side of the hatch.
  5. Place the visor on the surface and fasten the screws with a screwdriver.

The deflector must be firmly glued, otherwise it will fall off during strong winds. But the adhesive tape leaves traces and you will have to update the paintwork. Therefore, be sure to make a protective backing of adhesive tape.

On the hood

Usually, soft double-sided pads and mounting clips are included with the plug-in deflector. Manufacturers make them from plastic or metal.

Installing deflectors on the hood

The product is attached to the inner reinforcing frame of the hood in the following way:

  1. Wash the car and wipe with a dry cloth.
  2. Attach the windshields to the surface and make marks in the place of the intended attachment.
  3. Wipe the deflectors with an alcohol swab.
  4. Glue soft pads on the outside and inside of the hood to protect the paintwork.
  5. Attach the clips to the glued areas so that their holes line up with the holes in the deflectors.
  6. Fasten clips and visors with screws.

Products with a plastic fastener in the center are on sale. They are attached in the following way:

  1. Attach them to the hood and mark the attachment point.
  2. Then wipe the structure with an alcohol wipe, press it against the hood and tighten the screws on the windshield. The structure must not touch the unprotected surface of the body.

Leave at least 10 mm of clearance between the hood and the windshield. Otherwise, it will be difficult to remove the dirt accumulated under the structure.

Installation errors and possible consequences

Be careful when installing the windshield so that you do not have to install it again. Be sure to mark the attachment points, otherwise the design will lie unevenly. In this case, it will be difficult to change it and not damage the paintwork.

First make sure that the deflector is suitable for your car. Otherwise, during installation, it may turn out that it is not the right size. There are no universal windshields, because each car has its own body design.

Mounting windshields on car doors

Choose warm, windless weather. The optimum temperature for installing visor is 18-20 degrees. It is not recommended to carry out installation in the cold period, the structure will fall off at the slightest breath of wind and you will have to constantly glue it. In winter, the installation of window deflectors on cars is carried out only in a heated garage or in a warm car service.

Do not forget to warm up the body surface. It should be warm and dry. Otherwise, the adhesive tape will not grab firmly, and the visor will fall off in 2-3 days.

A common mistake is not to degrease the body before installation. If it is coated with a protective agent or not sufficiently cleaned, the deflector will not hold.
