Proper securing of luggage in the car: nets, belts and mats. Guide

In the trunk of a car, nets and straps should also be used to secure cargo. We give examples of some practical solutions.

Although modern car manufacturers excel in designing compartments and shelves in their cabins, most cars have only a flat surface as standard. The trunk is rarely used fully, usually several times a year, when going on vacation or when renovating a house. Stable arrangement of luggage is not difficult, because pressing them against each other automatically eliminates the possibility of them sliding around the trunk. A much bigger problem is transporting, for example, several shopping bags in an almost empty trunk. However, there are practical ways to do this.

There are many gadgets available in the automotive market that make it easier to transport and assemble cargo in a car. One of the most popular are versatile boot nets that can be attached in a variety of ways. They are mainly used to cover, for example, shopping items placed in the middle of the floor. A flexible mesh is then attached to the boot. For this, many cars have special handles. However, their absence is not a problem. Mesh manufacturers usually add their own holders to the kit, which can be installed on almost any popular car model.

If the net is equipped with appropriate straps and attachments, it can also be attached to the back of the rear seat. It is usually sufficient to hook the straps onto the rear head restraint pins. This creates a roomy flexible pocket. These same nets are used to quickly prepare a pocket under the cargo rack in the trunk.

We also have Velcro products in the market. The mesh can then be attached to the trunk walls, for example by creating additional pockets. This type of solution is particularly suitable for station wagons where there is a difficult to manage vertical space between the C-pillar and the rear wheel arch housing in the trunk. Putting a grid in this place, we create a high roomy pocket. By choosing a longitudinal mesh, you can attach it between the side walls of the trunk, creating any separate space on the floor in it. In the trunk, it is also worth using material to prevent damage and dirt on the floor. In automotive stores, you can buy, first of all, special rugs. Most often they are made of lightweight foam or rubber. They are available in universal sizes and also designed for specific car models. Then they fit perfectly, covering the entire trunk floor.

If it has handles or fasteners, such a mat is usually correctly cut and profiled in these places. Prices range from PLN 80 to PLN 120 for products designed for specific car models. Universal rubber mats can be purchased for about PLN 40. When choosing a rug, pay attention to the height of its edges. The higher the better, because in case of spillage or spillage of cargo, we can be sure that it will not fall on the original trunk lining.

Or maybe a chest?

Many drivers, especially professional drivers, use various trunks and boxes in their cars. Auto accessory manufacturers know this. One of the most popular solutions is fabric trunks that are fastened with Velcro to the back wall of the sofa or trunk walls in the car. Very often, the body is made of a thick material that feels like felt to the touch. The most common colors are gray and black to reflect the upholstery. Online auction prices start at around PLN 20.

You can also use a plastic tool box to hide basic tools, paper towels, a flashlight, or first aid kit. So that it does not move while driving, it is enough to glue it with double-sided Velcro tape and attach it to the floor or walls of the trunk. Boxes and ribbons are best found in DIY hypermarkets, where they are the cheapest.

Roof space

An alternative to the trunk can be a properly arranged roof box. luggage straps or elastic bands are standard on most models. But in addition, the trunk can be equipped with special nets. You can also buy special mats and box mats. Here they perform a dual function. First, they prevent the cargo from sliding. But they also soundproof the trunk. This is very important, because luggage placed too loosely inside a plastic trunk can make a lot of noise. Prices for boxes depend on the capacity and manufacturer. They start at around PLN 800 and go up to around PLN 4000. Rugs cost about 50 zł. You must remember that you will also need a base to mount the box, i.e. crossbars attached to the roof of the car. Prices start at around PLN 150.

It is also possible to attach a classic roof rack to the base, to which the load is attached with special straps or rubber straps. Such a device performs the same task as the box, except that the load is not shielded. You have to pay for a roof rack from about PLN 100-120 and more.
