Highway Code for Alabama Drivers

While many traffic rules are based on common sense or drivers' knowledge of how to read signs, there are other rules that may differ from state to state. The following are some of the rules of the road in Alabama that may differ from those you are used to in other states.

Using the seat belt

  • All passengers in the front seats must wear seat belts.

  • Children under 15 must use seat belts in the front and rear seats.

  • Infants and young children must be in appropriate child safety seats.

  • Additional seats are required until the age of five.

Cell phone use

  • Drivers can make calls but cannot read, write or send text messages or emails.

Motorcyclists

  • It is forbidden to be in the same lane as a motorcyclist in your vehicle.

Use of alcohol

  • Drivers cannot have a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 08 or higher.

  • Drivers under the age of 21 cannot drive with a BAC 02 or higher.

Fundamental rules

  • right of way - The right of way is not mandatory. Drivers must follow traffic signs and only continue when it is safe to do so, even if another motorist or pedestrian breaks the law.

  • Carousel - Entrance only on the right

  • Includes - Drivers can turn left at a red light, provided they follow all traffic signs.

  • Walkthrough - Drivers may detour on the left on two-lane roads as long as it does not require speeding and there are no "Do Not Pass" signs. Walking over the shoulder is prohibited.

  • Pedestrians Pedestrians always have the advantage. Drivers must give way, even if pedestrians cross the road incorrectly.

  • Ambulances - Drivers cannot follow within 500 feet of an ambulance that has its siren on or headlights flashing.

  • Garbage Throwing objects out of windows or leaving rubbish on the road is illegal.

  • move over - When emergency vehicles stop on the side of the road, drivers cannot be in the lane closest to them. If a safe lane change is not possible, drivers must slow down to 15 mph in accordance with posted limits. On a two-lane road, drive as far as possible without interfering with oncoming traffic. Slow down to 10 mph if the posted limit is 20 mph or less.

  • Headlight dimming - Drivers are required to dim their high beam headlights within 200 feet when they are behind another vehicle, or 500 feet when a vehicle is approaching from a different direction.

  • Wipers - Every time the wipers are used, the headlights must be on by law.

  • Bike paths - Drivers may not enter bike lanes unless they are turning into a driveway or when a solid line becomes a dotted line.

Necessary equipment on the roads

  • All vehicles must have windshield wipers if the vehicle has a windshield.

  • Silencers are required on all vehicles and cannot have cutouts, bypasses, or other modifications to increase engine noise levels.

  • Foot brakes and parking brakes are required on all vehicles.

  • You need rear view mirrors.

  • Needs working horns.
