You might think that if you know the traffic rules for one state, you know them all. However, each state has its own laws and regulations for drivers. If you're planning on heading to Rhode Island soon, use this guide to brush up on Rhode Island's traffic rules.

Rhode Island General Road Safety Rules

  • Children children under the age of eight, less than 57 inches tall and/or weighing less than 80 pounds must travel in a rear-facing child seat. Children between the ages of 18 and XNUMX can sit in any position but must always wear seat belts.

  • If school bus has flashing red lights and/or an activated STOP sign, drivers in both directions must stop. Failure to stop in front of a school bus may result in a $300 fine and/or suspension of your license for 30 days.

  • Drivers must always give emergency vehicles right of way. Do not enter the intersection if an ambulance is approaching, and if it is overtaking you, safely pull over and let it pass before re-entering traffic.

  • Pedestrians at pedestrian crossings always have the right of way. All motorists, cyclists and motorcyclists must give way to pedestrians at pedestrian crossings. At the same time, pedestrians must follow the “GO” and “DO NOT GO” signals and pay attention to traffic.

  • Always heal traffic lights not working how would you four-way stop. All drivers must come to a complete stop and proceed as they would at any other four-way stop.

  • Yellow flashing traffic lights signal drivers to slow down and approach with caution. A red flashing traffic light should be considered a stop sign.

  • Drivers can cross bike lanes to turn, but cannot enter the lane to prepare for the turn. You should also give way to cyclists in the lane before the turn and give as much room as possible (three to five feet recommended) when overtaking.

Important rules for safe driving

  • On multi-lane highways, use the left lane for traffic. passing and the right lane for normal driving. Overtaking on the left is always recommended, but overtaking on the right is permitted when the vehicle on the left is turning left on a street wide enough for two lanes without obstacles or parked cars, and on a one-way street with two or more lanes in the same direction without obstacles to traffic.

  • You can do right on red at a traffic light in Rhode Island after coming to a complete stop, checking for oncoming traffic and checking if it's safe to drive.

  • reversals are allowed wherever there is no U-turn sign. Be aware of oncoming traffic and traffic approaching from side streets when making a U-turn.

  • All drivers must stop at four way stop. After stopping, you must give way to all vehicles that have stopped there before you. If you arrive at the same time as one or more other vehicles, yield to vehicles on your right before proceeding.

  • As in other states, intersection blocking is illegal. If there is no room to drive through the entire intersection, stop in front of the intersection and wait until the road is clear.

  • Some areas of Rhode Island may have linear measurement signals help with exits on the freeways. When there are no signals, accelerate and adjust your speed to match the traffic flow, yield to vehicles on the freeway and merge into the traffic flow.
