Checking and replacing fuses

If something electrical in your car has stopped working, check the fuse first. Determine from the table on the pages and/or the diagram on the fuse box cover which fuses control this unit. Check these fuses first, but check all fuses before deciding a blown fuse is the cause. Replace blown fuses and check if the device works.

  1. Turn the ignition key to the LOCK (0) position. Turn off headlights and all accessories.
  2. Remove the fuse box cover.
  3. Check each of the large fuses in the fuse box under the hood by looking at the wire inside. Remove the screws with a Phillips screwdriver.
  4. Check the smaller fuses in the underhood main fuse box and all fuses in the inner fuse box by pulling each fuse with a fuse puller located in the inner fuse box.
  5. Locate the burnt wire inside the fuse. If it is blown, replace it with one of the spare fuses of the same or smaller rating.

If you can't drive without fixing the problem and you don't have a spare fuse, get a fuse of the same or smaller rating from one of the other circuits. Make sure you can bypass this circuit temporarily (for example, from a radio or auxiliary outlet).

If you replace a blown fuse with a lower rated fuse, it may blow again. It doesn't indicate anything. Replace the fuse with a fuse of the correct rating as soon as possible.
  6. If a replacement fuse of the same rating blows after a short period of time, your vehicle probably has a serious electrical problem. Leave a blown fuse in this circuit and have the vehicle checked by a qualified technician.

Notice

  • Replacing the fuse with a larger fuse greatly increases the chance of damage to the electrical system. If you do not have a spare fuse suitable for the circuit, install a fuse with a lower rating.
  • Never replace a blown fuse with anything other than a new fuse.

The internal fuse box is located behind the tabs as shown on the driver's coin tray. To access it, remove the tray by turning the disc counterclockwise and then pulling it towards you. To install the coin tray, align the tabs on the bottom, rotate the tray up to secure its side clips, then rotate the dial clockwise.
