With a top speed of over 420 km/h, no other car sold today can match it. But don't expect to see it on the road anytime soon. Price: $3.8 million plus taxes.

Forget about saving the planet, this supersonic supercar has almost enough power to circle the globe.

On the eve of the Geneva Motor Show was presented the successor to the fastest production car in the world.

The Bugatti Chiron can hit 100 km/h in an incredible 2.5 seconds and has a top speed of over 420 km/h, making it faster than a Formula XNUMX racing car.

The numbers behind the Bugatti Chiron are staggering

The Chiron succeeds the award-winning Bugatti Veyron, which set the world speed record twice: once in 2005 (408.47 km/h) and again in 2010 (431.072 km/h) with an updated model.

The Bugatti Chiron is expected to break the 431 km/h speed record next year with an even more powerful model, but it is currently the fastest production car sold in the world.

It's so fast that Michelin had to create special tires that wouldn't explode at such high speeds.

The numbers behind the Bugatti Chiron are staggering.

The W16 engine (two V8s mounted back to back) has four turbochargers.

This is by far the most powerful engine ever fitted to a production car, with a staggering 1103kW (nearly 1500 horsepower in old money) and a staggering 1600Nm of torque.

In translation, the Bugatti Chiron has 50% more power than the original Veyron released in 2005 and is the equivalent of four Holden Commodore V8 engines in one.

Power is sent through a seven-speed automatic transmission that drives all four wheels.

The brakes are larger than those of a Formula 100 race car, which means the Chiron can stop from XNUMX km/h in less time and in a shorter distance than a Toyota Yaris hatchback can pass the same test.

The French supercar brand, owned by German automaker Volkswagen since 1998, has reportedly lost money on every one of the 450 Bugatti Veyrons produced from 2005 to 2015.

only 500 will be made

But the company says it won't make that mistake again.

The original Bugatti Veyron started at €1 million plus taxes (around AU$1.5 million), but the new model will cost €2.5 million plus taxes (around AU$3.8 million). A total of 500 pieces will be produced.

If it were sold in Australia, the luxury car tax alone (33 percent on every dollar over $63,184) would add $1.2 million to the price, bringing the total cost locally to even $5 million.

However, the Bugatti Chiron supercars are not destined for Australia, as the model is planned to be left-hand drive only, like its predecessor.

Despite this, at least one Veyron has ended up in the hands of an anonymous collector who can only use it on a private track as it cannot be registered.

Abroad, the Bugatti Veyron attracted the rich and famous, as well as those who couldn't afford it.

Actor and former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was often caught by the paparazzi driving a silver Veyron.

The police in Dubai also have one in their fleet of supercars.

But at least one American Bugatti Veyron owner appears to have overestimated his financial obligations.

Last year, a supercar junkyard owner was sentenced to one year in prison for deliberately driving his Veyron into a lake in an attempt to collect insurance payouts.

At the time, he said he swerved to avoid a low-flying pelican. But the "accident" was caught on camera after motorists spotted a Bugatti Veyron passing by the lake.
