Geely FY11 unveiled but no launch planned in Australia

This is an attractive Chinese SUV with a bit of German looks, a Swedish heart and Australian data used in its development. But while the Geely FY11 may be the most advanced product we've seen from China to date, it's also unlikely to make it to our shores.

Geely (owners of Volvo) has unveiled early sketches of its coupe-style SUV, codenamed FY11, which is the brand's first model built using Volvo's compact modular architecture.

The platform, according to Geely, will give the FY11 “the space for true flexibility and scalability, allowing engineers and the design team to work together to create a vehicle with true sporting qualities; from transmission to design.

Speaking of powertrains, Geely hasn't revealed all its cards yet, but we do know that the FY11 will be powered by a 2.0kW, 175Nm 350 diesel engine, and that it will be offered in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations.

But while the makers of the BMW X4 SUV are using Australia's extreme conditions to test their vehicles, an official told us today that there are "no plans" to bring the FY11 to our market.

“We have no plans to enter the Australian market at this time,” one spokesperson said. Our Lynk&Co (SUV) will go to Europe and then to North America, but now the Geely brand is exporting mainly to ASEAN and Eastern Europe.”
