The ID Buzz Cargo looks similar to the historic Kombi van, but that's where the similarities end.

The Volkswagen Group showed off another all-electric concept with the introduction of its new ID Buzz Cargo van at the IAA Commercial Vehicles Show in Hannover this week.

Close to production, the electric car is designed for urban transportation and can carry a payload of up to 800 kg.

It is based on the MEB electric vehicle platform that will underpin the entire first wave of ID models, as well as a range of electric vehicles from Skoda, Audi and Seat.

Sharing dimensions and styling with the iconic Kombi van, the Cargo is 5048mm long, 1976mm wide and 1963mm high.

The car has a large cargo area, which can be accessed through a sliding door on the side, and double swing doors at the rear.

Performance figures are yet to be revealed, but the MEB platform uses a scalable under-floor battery system and provides a range of 330 to 500 km in some applications.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles also introduced electric Taxi versions of the Transporter and Caddy, a mild hybrid Transporter, a hydrogen fuel cell Crafter and a tricycle electric delivery bike.

VW's local division has confirmed that it will be importing some models of the ID family of electric vehicles from 2021, but did not provide details on the models under consideration.

The rollout will likely start with a small Golf-sized ID car that goes into production next year and goes on sale overseas in 2020.

In Europe, the launch of the ID Buzz Cargo is expected around 2021 as the Volkswagen Group starts fulfilling its promise of 27 new all-electric vehicles by 2022.
