2022 Volkswagen Polo GTI unveiled: fresh look and new tech to compete with Toyota GR Yaris and Ford Fiesta ST

The updated Volkswagen Polo GTI should appear in early 2022.

Hot hatchbacks tend to show off their might in terms of power and handling, but the new 2022 Volkswagen Polo GTI is all about a technological upgrade.

The latest member of the facelifted Polo family has been introduced, and the refreshed GTI introduces a revised look with new IQ.Light matrix LED headlights, a new lightbar grille that the company claims is meant to visually connect the Polo with its new EV lineup ID. Other cosmetic changes include a new front bumper design and new alloy wheels, while at the rear there are new LED lights with an animated indicator.

But it's what's underneath the surface that's been the real focus of the Volkswagen team. For the first time, the Polo GTI has semi-autonomous driving technology thanks to Volkswgaen's IQ.Drive Travel Assist system, which can control steering, acceleration and braking under certain road conditions all the way from standstill to 210 km/h. It essentially combines the features of adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist to keep you a safe distance from vehicles ahead and inside the lane.

The infotainment system has also been updated to the latest version, bringing both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wireless integration.

The powertrain is carried over unchanged from the previous model, meaning a 2.0kW/147Nm 320-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. It also retains the same dynamically tuned chassis that is 15mm lower than the standard Polo to offer a more engaging driving experience to try and keep up with its competitors including the Ford Fiesta ST.

Volkswagen Australia says the new Polo GTI should arrive in the second quarter of 2022. Full pricing and specifications will be revealed closer to its local launch.
