How does a rust converter work?
Metal corrosion in the conventional sense is considered an unpleasant defect that destroys the structure and worsens the appearance of parts made from it. Although, in fact, the metal in the processed and familiar state for us is unnatural. In nature, iron is in the form of oxides, as in the most stable form. It constantly strives for this stable form, oxidizing and corroding. That is, a person, struggling with corrosion, is trying to resist the natural process for nature.
Almost all rust converters are based on the same main component: phosphoric acid. When interacting with iron oxides, orthophosphoric acid actively decomposes oxides and is converted into iron orthophosphate. This compound covers the metal with a protective layer, which for some time hides the treated surface from external negative influences. Also, many converters contain zinc ions, which create a reinforced protective film with a zinc layer, which can be roughly compared with galvanizing a car.
Today there are many products called rust converters. And their compositions at the chemical level vary quite a lot, which leads to different duration of protection and different resistance to external aggressors.
A Brief Overview of Rust Converters
Consider several popular rust converters in Russia.
- Fenom FN. Rust converter with a pronounced effect of creating a protective film. It is also called a ground effect transducer. It costs around 180 rubles for a bottle of 110 ml. Inexpensive and quite effective.
- Astrohim AC-470 and Ac-4662. The two most popular converters from this company, although there are more similar products in the line. The first composition contains zinc ions and costs about 150 rubles for a 500 ml bottle with a mechanical sprayer. The second is a purely phosphate converter. Its price fluctuates around 80 rubles for a 250 ml can. Both products have positive reviews from Russian motorists for a good price / effect ratio.
- Kudo KU-70005. KU-70005 with a structural modifier quickly removes rust and creates a protective film with good adhesion, which allows you to confidently apply paint after processing on metal surfaces for technical purposes. It is not recommended to paint decorative surfaces after treatment with this agent without additional preparation. The tool costs around 120 rubles.
- Hi Gear HG. One of the best compositions in its price segment. The price is about 700 rubles for a 335 ml aerosol can. Effectively breaks down rust and creates a noticeably more durable barrier to rust recurrence compared to cheaper products.
- Sonax Rust Converter & Primer. Transducer with primer effect. The price is roughly comparable to a similar tool from Hi-Gear. It gives a good effect both in terms of duration of action, and in terms of confronting an aggressive environment. Sold in 125 ml bottles.
- Permatex Rust Treatment. Powerful rust-fighting compound. Has several modifications. Sold in various forms of packaging (from standard bottles to aerosols) and in different volumes. The price is above the market average when compared with similar products.
Regardless of which rust converter you choose, it is important to remember one simple truth: all these products are temporary and do not guarantee that corrosion will not occur through the protective film over the treated area. And for sure, processing with a converter will be less effective than a complex of bodywork with metal preparation, its primer and subsequent system painting.
But in general, a fairly simple rule applies: the more expensive the product, the better it works. Therefore, for quick independent processing of important body elements, it is better to choose a more expensive composition. For the prevention or dressing of less critical areas, you can purchase a less expensive tool.
