Rust converter for car

Corrosion of the car body is one of the most exciting problems of modern car owners. The appearance of rust on the body is affected by:

  • chips from stones and other objects falling on the body when driving;
  • chemical reagents used in the winter, road services;
  • poor quality anti-corrosion treatment or poor quality metal.

The parts of the body that are most susceptible to corrosion: the hood, the lower part of the doors, sills, fenders, arches, trunk, and also if you drive stamped discs, then after several seasons of operation they begin to rust. Just today we will be engaged in the restoration of stamped rims, which are largely rusted.

How to get rid of rust on stamped wheels?

So, we have stamped discs covered with deep rust.

What we need to remove rust:

  • sandpaper (the deeper the rust, the larger the sandpaper should be taken). If the rust is light, then 120 and 60 can be used;
  •  a rag to clean the disc after sanding;
  • degreaser;
  • rust-to-soil converter (it is convenient to apply the transducer to the disk in aerosol format, since it will be easier to penetrate into hard-to-reach places and bends);
  • paint (you can use an aerosol, it is much more convenient).

We do not advertise specific manufacturers of chemical converters of rust to soil, therefore we do not name the brand used. If you are interested in knowing which agent gave such an effect and you want to use it, then ask a question in the comments and indicate your email, we will send you the names of the chemicals used in this test.

Step 1. Sanding rusty places on the disks. The main task at this stage is to remove the so-called “flakes” of rust, i.e. something that has already begun to flake off. It is necessary to obtain a flat surface, covered with a light layer of rust.

Step 2. We clean it from rusty dust with a dry cloth and then treat the entire surface with a degreaser. Let the surface dry.

Step 3. Apply the rust converter to the entire disc. Further, depending on the product, the condition of the disc, it is necessary to repeat the application 1-2 more times with an interval of 3-5 minutes. After a certain interval of time, you will notice that the places where there was rust begin to turn black, which means that the process has begun and the rust begins to turn into a primer. Now you need to let the product fully work, for this it is recommended not to paint for 24 hours.

Step 4. We paint the disks, having previously covered the tires from paint ingress, for example, with adhesive tape (in case you did not disassemble the wheel). Let's see what happened.

The wheels look much better than before. It is difficult to say how long this effect will last, but at least for a season these discs will be in good condition.

Questions and answers:

How to wash off rust on discs? For this, special wheel disc cleaners are used. They are composed of various acids, and they act as rust converters.

How to repair rusted stamped rims? The most effective but expensive method is sandblasting (works like sandpaper, but with minimal effort), followed by priming and painting.

How to remove oxides on alloy wheels? Many motorists use vinegar for these purposes. But special auto chemicals will cope with complex plaque. Fast acting acid-based and abrasive products can damage the disc surface.

What paint to paint stamped wheels? Acrylic paint (matt or glossy) is ideal for steel rims. Some motorists use nitro paint, liquid rubber, powder formulations, alkyd-melamine suspensions.

    At the beginning of the article, it talks about chips and corrosion on the hood and doors - is it possible to process them in a similar way and tint them? Or is it impossible to do without a service and a complete repaint?
