The role of cleaning the windshield falls on the windshield washer and wiper. When your windshield is dirty, you spray windshield washer fluid on the glass and turn on the wipers to get the dirty fluid out of your line of sight.

The fluid that is sprayed from the washer jets comes from a reservoir under the hood of your vehicle. Some vehicles equipped with a rear wiper and washer use the same reservoir, while others have a separate rear reservoir. When the washer fluid is sprayed, a pump inside the reservoir raises the fluid to the washer nozzles and it is distributed over the glass.

Depending on the type of liquid that has been placed in your tank, it may freeze if the temperature drops low enough.

  • washing insects, a solution formulated with cleaners to remove insect residue and other stubborn dirt from the windshield, freezes when exposed to any constant temperature below freezing (32°F). Keep in mind that a frosty morning is not enough to freeze the washer fluid.

  • washer fluid antifreeze available in several formulas. Some have freezing temperatures of -20°F, -27°F, -40°F or even as low as -50°F. This washer fluid contains alcohol, which significantly lowers the freezing point of the washer fluid. It can be methanol, ethanol or ethylene glycol mixed with water.

If the washer fluid is frozen, thaw it as soon as possible. In some cases, freezing can cause the tank to crack or damage the pump due to water expansion. If this happens, all your washer fluid will leak out and your windshield washers won't splatter. The washer reservoir cannot be repaired and must be replaced.
