Motorcycle clutch problems

The clutch is an indispensable element for the operation of a motorcycle. This is useful for speed control and safe driving. However, like all motorcycle equipment, the clutch can have certain problems. For better driving, it is important to fix faults as soon as possible.

What is a motorcycle clutch used for? What are the common motorcycle clutch problems? When should you change it? How to keep it in good condition? In this article, you will find explanations of your motorcycle's clutch problems, as well as some tips for optimizing its performance.

Role of the motorcycle clutch

The motorcycle clutch acts as a link between the engine and the gearbox. Usually used for gear shifting. When the driver wants to change gear, he must press the clutch, which will be responsible for transmitting information to both the engine and the wheels. There are two main steps to using a clutch: decoupling and coupling.

Clutch is the act of actuating the clutch lever to break the connection between the engine and the wheels in order to change the speed. Then, after a gear change, the clutch engages to reconnect the engine and wheels to take the gear change into account. So you understand that motorcycle clutch is used by the rider on a daily basis. Therefore, this part of the motorcycle must always be in good condition.

Different types of motorcycle clutches

There are two types of motorcycle clutches. It is a dry single-disc clutch and a wet multi-plate clutch. In addition, the clutch control can be hydraulic or cable operated.

Multi-plate clutch in oil bath

It must be said that most motorcycles have this type of clutch. As his name indicates, this clutch consists of several discs, or about fifteen. These discs are stacked on top of each other and covered by a tray. The latter is itself supported by springs.

This disc association is impregnated with engine oil, making it invisible to the naked eye. If this type of clutch is used the most, it is because it offers several advantages, in particular its progressive nature, which contributes to a more comfortable and more efficient driving experience. In addition, this clutch has a longer service life.

Dry monodic clutch

Unlike a multi-plate clutch, this model has only one disc. It is used very little, but it is found on some BMW and Guzzi motorcycles. The disc is located on the outside of the motorcycle, allowing less harmful to the environment... It works with cooling air and is much more environmentally friendly.

Cable management

To use your cable drive, make sure it is well lubricated and well maintained. It is also necessary to ensure its impeccable care. With this type of control, you have the ability to adjust the cable tension.

Hydraulic control

Hydraulic control is less rigid than cable control. You just need to remember to change your oil every two years.

Motorcycle clutch problems

Frequent motorcycle clutch problems

Motorcycle clutches usually have the same problems regardless of the motorcycle make and model. Very often the clutch slips, touches, is noisy, it is difficult to find neutral, or the clutch is disengaged and the clutch becomes difficult. Note that these problems usually arise from clutch aging.

Clutch slips

This problem is the most common and can be recognized by certain symptoms. For example, when you are accelerating and your car's engine speed does not drop immediately after releasing the clutch, you should be thinking about slipping while accelerating your motorcycle's clutch. Moreover, the clutch may slip when hot due to the burning smell at engine level in the passenger compartment.

Clutch slip can be caused by a worn cable or a worn disc. It can also be the result of a failure of the springs or diaphragms. In addition, the clutch can slip when the hydraulic oil is too old and needs to be pumped.

Abrasion grip

This problem is caused by warped discs that can no longer engage gradually and properly... Therefore, when you drive very fast often, putting too much stress on the clutch can start to seize.

Inability to find a neutral point

The inability to find a neutral point occurs due tofrayed or seized cable... This problem can also be related to the loss of pressure in the clutch master cylinder. In some cases, when the hydraulic oil needs to be changed, this may be manifested by the inability to find neutral.

When should a motorcycle clutch be changed?

There is no standard mileage for clutch replacement on your motorcycle. It is best to follow the recommendations in the motorcycle manual. However, we recommend replacing the clutch before it causes a breakdown or a serious accident on your machine.

A broken or slipping clutch should be replaced automatically. The replacement is carried out by a professional who has all the necessary materials to solve the problem.

Tips on how to make your grip lasting

The strength and durability of the clutch depends on how you use it. In other words, for the clutch to last, you need to use it correctly. For example, always start the car first and especially do not run the engine at high revs.

Also, remember to change the engine oil regularly for long term use of the clutch. In addition, when replacing the clutch kit, we recommend doing the same with the control cable, gearbox and engine oil seals.

Remember that the clutch is a very important element in the operation of the motorcycle. It can fail mainly due to aging and misuse. Therefore, it is necessary to learn how to use the clutch and change it if necessary.
