The 6F35 automatic transmission is a joint project between Ford and GM, launched in 2002. Structurally, the product corresponds to its predecessor - the GM 6T40 (45) box, from which the mechanics are taken. A distinctive feature of 6F35 are electrical sockets designed for all types of vehicles and pallet designs.

Automatic transmissions are manufactured in the USA at Ford plants located in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Some components are manufactured and assembled in GM factories.

Since 2008, the box has been installed on cars with front and all-wheel drive, the American Ford and the Japanese Mazda. Automatic machines that are used on cars with a power plant of less than 2,5 liters are different compared to machines that are installed on cars with a 3-liter engine.

Automatic transmission 6F35 is unified, built on a modular basis, automatic transmission units are replaced by blocks. The method is taken from the previous model 6F50(55).

In 2012, the design of the product has undergone changes, the electrical and hydraulic components of the box began to differ. Some transmission components installed on vehicles in 2013 are no longer eligible for early retrofits. The second generation of the box received the index "E" in the marking and became known as 6F35E.

6F35 box problems

Transmission problems automatic transmission FORD KUGA

There are complaints from owners of Ford Mondeo and Ford Kuga cars. Symptoms of breakdowns are manifested in the form of jerks and long pauses when switching from second to third gear. Just as often, the transfer of the selector from position R to position D is accompanied by knocks, noises and the warning light on the dashboard lights up. Most of all complaints come from cars in which automatic transmission is combined with a 2,5-liter power plant (150 hp).

The disadvantages of the box, one way or another, are related to the wrong driving style, control settings and oil. Automatic transmission 6F35, resource, level and purity of the fluid, which are interconnected, does not tolerate loads on cold lubrication. It is necessary to warm up the 6F35 automatic transmission in winter, otherwise premature repairs cannot be avoided.

On the other hand, dynamic driving overheats the gearbox, which causes premature aging of the oil. Old oil wears out the gaskets and seals in the housing. As a result, after a run of 30-40 thousand kilometers, the pressure of the transmission fluid in the nodes is insufficient. This wears out the valve plate and solenoids prematurely.

Premature resolution of the problem with a drop in oil pressure causes slippage and wear of the torque converter clutches. Replace worn parts, hydraulic block, solenoids, seals and pump bushings.

The service life of the automatic transmission depends, among other things, on the configuration of the control module. The first boxes came out with settings for aggressive driving. This increased efficiency and reduced fuel consumption. However, I had to pay with the resource of the box and early failure. Products of late release were placed in a rigid frame that limited the conductor and prevented damage to the valve body and the transformer box.

Replacing transmission fluid in automatic transmission 6F35

Changing the oil in the automatic transmission 6F35 Ford Kuga depends on the operating conditions of the car. With standard operation, which involves driving on asphalt, the fluid changes every 45 thousand kilometers. If the car was operated at sub-zero temperatures, suffered from drifts, was subjected to an aggressive driving style, was used as a traction tool, etc., the replacement is carried out every 20 thousand kilometers.

You can determine the need for an oil change by the degree of wear. When performing this operation, they are guided by the color, smell and structure of the liquid. The condition of the oil is evaluated in a hot and cold box. When checking a hot automatic transmission, it is recommended to drive 2-3 kilometers to raise sediment from the bottom. The oil is normal, red in color, without the smell of burning. The presence of chips, the smell of burning or the black color of the liquid indicates the need for urgent replacement, an insufficient level of liquid in the housing is unacceptable.

Possible causes of leaks:

  • Strong wear of the box shafts;
  • Deterioration of box seals;
  • jump box input shaft;
  • Body seal aging;
  • Insufficient tightening of the box mounting bolts;
  • Violation of the sealing layer;
  • Premature wear of the body valve disc;
  • Clogging of the channels and plungers of the body;
  • Overheating and, as a result, wear of the components and parts of the box.

When choosing a transmission fluid in a box, follow the manufacturer's recommendations. For Ford vehicles, the native oil is ATF type Mercon specification. Ford Kuga also uses substitute oils that win in price, for example: Motorcraft XT 10 QLV. A complete replacement will require 8-9 liters of fluid.

When partially changing the oil in the automatic transmission 6F35 Ford Kuga, do the following yourself:

  • Warm up the box after driving 4-5 kilometers, testing all switching modes;
  • Put the car exactly on the overpass or pit, move the gear selector to the “N” position;
  • Unscrew the drain plug and drain the remaining liquid into a previously prepared container. Make sure that there are no sawdust or metal inclusions in the liquid, their presence requires contacting the service for possible additional repairs;
  • Install the drain plug in place, use a wrench with a pressure gauge to check the tightening torque of 12 Nm;
  • Open the hood, unscrew the filler cap from the box. Pour new transmission fluid through the filler hole, with a volume equal to the volume of the drained old fluid, approximately 3 liters;
  • Tighten the plug, turn on the power plant of the car. Let the engine run for 3-5 minutes, move the selector switch to all positions with a pause of several seconds in each of the modes;
  • Repeat the procedure for draining and filling in new oil 2-3 times, this will allow you to clean the system as much as possible from contaminants and old fluid;
  • After the final fluid change, warm up the engine and check the lubricant temperature;
  • Check the liquid level in the box for compliance with the required standard;
  • Check body and seals for fluid leaks.

When checking the oil level, remember that there is no dipstick in the 6F35 box; check the transmission fluid level with a control plug. This should be done regularly, after warming up the box after driving ten kilometers.

The oil filter is installed inside the box, the pan is removed for removal. The filter element is changed at higher mileage and each time the pan is removed.

A complete oil change is carried out in a box at a service station equipped with special stands for the procedure. A single drain and fill of oil will renew the liquid by 30%. The partial oil change described above is sufficient, given the regular operation and the short period of operation of the gearbox between changes.

6F35 box service

The 6F35 box is not a problem, as a rule, the owner who improperly operates the device becomes the cause of breakdowns. Proper operation of the gearbox and oil changes depending on the mileage guarantee trouble-free operation of the product for more than 150 km.

Diagnostics of the box is carried out in the case of:

  • Extraneous noises, vibrations, squeaks are heard in the box;
  • Incorrect gear shifting;
  • The transmission of the box does not change at all;
  • Drop in the oil level in the gearbox, change in color, smell, consistency.

The symptoms listed above require immediate contact with a service center to diagnose and fix the problem.

In order to avoid premature product failure and extend the service life, the purpose of the planned activities is carried out in accordance with the technical standards established for the Ford Kuga car body.
