Buying a used BMW often leads many drivers to consider certified pre-owned options. BMW is one of the many manufacturers that have a Certified Used Car Program (CPO). Each car manufacturer builds its CPO program differently; read on to learn about the features of the BMW CPO program.

To be considered a BMW certified used car, vehicles must be under six years old and have less than 60,000 miles on them. These vehicles are backed by a certified 24 month or 50,000 mile limited warranty.

Inspection

To ensure that every used car certified by BMW is the "Perfect Driving Car", every car must pass a 196-point test, which includes:

  • Security features
  • Vehicle performance
  • Export
  • Comprehensive road test

If something does not meet the high standards of the BMW technicians, it must be corrected. If it cannot be repaired and does not meet factory standards, the vehicle cannot become a Certified Used BMW.

Warranty

BMW CPO vehicles come with a warranty that covers the repair or replacement of any part that fails under normal use within the first 24 months or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. The warranty requires a deductible of $50 for each visit to the service center. It also includes:

  • 24/24 Roadside Assistance: CPO vehicle owners can contact BMW 50 hours a day for flat tires, dead batteries and emergency fuel delivery. This benefit also includes towing services up to XNUMX miles and a blocking service compensation of up to $XNUMX per incident.

  • Vehicle History Report: Every CPO vehicle owner gets full access to CARFAX service report, service history and reviews for their specific BMW vehicle.

Prices

Buyers who choose to purchase a vehicle through the BMW Certified Used Car Program will see a difference in overall profits. The price will typically be about 10% higher than a typical "used" BMW car.

For example: At the time of this writing in April 2016, a used 2012 BMW M3 Coupe was worth about $38,952 on the Kelley Blue Book; the same car under the BMW CPO program costs about $42,858.

Compare BMW to other CPO programs

Whether or not you choose to use a CPO vehicle, it is always wise to have any used vehicle inspected by an independent certified mechanic before purchasing it. A certified used car does not mean that the car is in perfect condition, and any used car can have serious problems that are not visible to the untrained eye. If you're in the market to buy a used car, schedule a pre-purchase inspection for complete peace of mind.
