Tesla firmware 2020.36.x with speed limit sign recognition • CARS

Tesla 2020.36.x software is being rolled out to first-time car owners - and to those not participating in the early access program. One of the most important innovations is character recognition using cameras, and not just reading them from a database.

Real character recognition is finally making its way into the newest Tesla

Character recognition is sometimes standard even in cheap cars, whereas Tesla with AP HW2.x and HW3 (FSD) hardware platforms used [only?] speed limit information from an internal database. There have been claims that the California manufacturer's cars can see and understand the signs - because STOP recognizes them - but cannot respond to them due to Mobileye's patents.

> Can Tesla read speed limits? What does the second border with a gray border mean? [we answer]

The situation changes in firmware 2020.36.x. Tesla officially states that Speed Assist function – informing the driver about exceeding the speed limit in a given area – it also recognizes constraints by reading them from symbols. The mechanism is designed to work on local roads. This is the first such official information for vehicles equipped with Autopilot computers newer than AP1.

This software version belongs to the FSD computer (Autopilot HW3), it is not yet clear if it will work in vehicles with HW2.x. Speed Assist is activated via Control> Autopilot> Speed limit.

2020.36.x software also introduces sound signal when green light flashes on the siren (also HW3 / FSD only) unless TACC or Autosteer is enabled. And while Tesla points out that the driver is responsible for observing the environment, such notification can be helpful, especially during tiring city driving.

The Kia Niro plug-in we tested has a similar feature. – after waiting, the machine displays a message stating that the car in front of us began to move away... So you can close your eyes for a moment to let them rest.
