Do-it-yourself oil check and change in manual transmission and automatic transmission of Volkswagen B5 cars

Volkswagen cars, B5 series, appeared on Russian roads in the second half of the 90s of the last century. Although more than 20 years have passed since the beginning of their production, these cars are still driving, delighting their owners with reliability, unpretentiousness and German workmanship. From 1996 to 2005, two generations of sedans and station wagons of this model were produced. The first modification was made from 1996 to 2000. The next generation received model numbers B5.5 and B5+. Cars were completed with mechanical and automatic transmissions of variable gears (manual transmission and automatic transmission).

Manual transmissions - features and maintenance

Volkswagen B5 is equipped with three types of 5- and 6-speed manual transmissions:

  1. Manual transmission with 5 steps 012/01W, designed for use in vehicles with gasoline and diesel power units with a capacity of 100 horsepower.
  2. Manual transmission model 01A, intended for gasoline engines with a volume of 2 to 2.8 liters.
  3. Mechanics with 5 and 6 gears, models 01E, works in cars with turbocharged diesel engines with a capacity of 130 horses or more.

The manual transmission is by far the most reliable transmission.

Automatic transmissions are available in two models:

  1. The four-speed automatic transmission 01N is controlled by a program that can adapt to road conditions, driving style, as well as the resistance exerted by the vehicle.
  2. The 5-speed automatic 01V (5 HP 19) is distinguished by the possibility of manual gear shifting (tiptronic). Controlled by a dynamic shift program.

Oil change in manual transmissions

The manufacturer indicates that the oil in the transmission boxes should not be changed. Maybe this is true for Western European operating conditions, when the car is changed to a new one after 5 years of operation. In Russia, the situation is somewhat different, so an oil change is recommended after every 60 thousand kilometers.

Fill in the box with gear oil corresponding to the code VW G 052 911 A2. Usually Castrol Syntrans Transaxle 75W-90 is used. If this grease is not available, you can replace it with Shell S4 G 75W-90, with the same characteristics. The 012/01W manual transmission requires 2.2 liters of transmission fluid. For boxes 01A and 01E, you will need a little more - up to 2.8 liters.

You can replace the lubricant yourself. The main condition for such work is the presence of a viewing hole, overpass or lift. There is one more nuance: the drain and fill plugs can be installed under the hexagon at 17. But there are manual transmissions in which the plugs can only be unscrewed with asterisks at 16, with holes in the middle (see. Fig.).

Heads for such plugs are not easy to get, besides they are expensive

Craftsmen drill a central ledge so that they can be unscrewed with an ordinary asterisk (see fig.).

Removing the protrusion is a good solution for those who cannot get the key VAG-3357 (TORX-3357)

If the problem with the key is solved and an oil replacement fluid is purchased, an auxiliary tool should be prepared:

  • a container for draining used oil, with a volume of at least 3 liters;
  • metal brush and rags;
  • A funnel with a hose of small diameter, about 1 meter long, put on it so that it can be pushed into the control hole of the gearbox.

The lubricant is replaced in the following sequence:

  1. A car, with a warm engine and a manual gearbox, is installed above a viewing hole or drives onto an overpass. The machine must be on a level surface, secured with the parking brake.
  2. The plug of the filler (control) hole, located in the front side of the manual transmission crankcase, is cleaned with a brush and wiped with a rag.
  3. After the filler hole is cleaned, it must be unscrewed.
  4. In the same way, the drain plug in the gearbox oil pan is cleaned.
  5. An empty container is installed under the drain hole, the cork is carefully unscrewed. Care must be taken as the dripping oil is very hot.

You need to wait until the old oil stops flowing out of the hole.
  6. After all the liquid has flowed out, a new copper washer is put on the drain plug and the plug is screwed into its seat.
  7. The hood opens, a hose is pulled through the engine compartment to the gearbox filler hole and wound inside the case.

You can also pour oil with a syringe
  8. Fresh lubricating fluid is carefully poured through the funnel until traces of it appear from the filler hole.

In the process of changing the oil in the manual transmission, 2 people must participate
  9. The hole through which the lubricant was poured is twisted. Remaining oil is wiped from the gearbox housing.
  10. You should make a short trip so that the oil composition disperses throughout the manual transmission mechanism.
  11. The machine is again installed above the inspection hole, after which it is necessary to allow the oil to cool slightly and drain into the crankcase. Then check its level by unscrewing the filler (control) plug again. The oil fluid should be at the bottom edge of the hole. If the level is low, add oil.

After changing the oil, many car owners note that the manual transmission starts to work better. Gear shifting is much easier, there is no extraneous noise when driving. The oil level is checked with a dipstick. Its edge on the dipstick should be in the middle, between the MIN and MAX marks.

Automatic gearboxes - maintenance and replacement of transmission fluid

The car manufacturer, the VAG concern, in the accompanying documentation for Volkswagen cars claims that the transmission fluid (ATF) cannot be replaced. If this vehicle is operated on Russian roads, it is advisable to replace the lubricant every 40 thousand kilometers of travel. Then the machine will serve for a long time without causing complaints. If this condition is not observed, the following malfunctions may occur:

The reason for this behavior can be not only the poor condition of the working fluid, but also its insufficient amount or the ingress of dirt into the control plate. Therefore, each case of non-standard behavior of the automatic transmission must be considered individually.

What ATF to use when replacing

For partial or complete replacement of the lubricant in both types of automatic transmissions, ATFs are used that meet the requirements of VW G 052162A2. The semi-synthetic working fluid Esso Type LT 71141 is recommended for use. It can be purchased at prices from 690 to 720 rubles per 1 liter. If it is not on sale, you can use it to replace Mobil LT 71141, at a price of 550 to 620 rubles. per litre.

For an 01N gearbox with 4 gears, 3 liters of working fluid are required for a partial replacement and 5.5 liters for a complete replacement. In addition, about 1 liter of gear oil corresponding to VW G 052145S2 is poured into the final drive of the box. If the car is equipped with a 5-speed automatic transmission 01V, a partial replacement will require 3.3 liters of lubricant composition. For a complete replacement, you need 9 liters of ATF.

The procedure for replacing the working fluid

The list of work performed when replacing ATF is similar to automatic transmission models 01N and 01V. For example, the fluid replacement in the V01 box is described. Before you start, you need to prepare the tool and purchase a couple of accessories. Need:

If it is necessary to remove the crankcase protection, additional keys may be required. Next, the following sequence of actions is performed:

  1. The engine and automatic transmission are warmed up by a short trip, then the car drives into a viewing hole or overpass, and is fixed by a parking brake.
  2. If there is a pallet protection, it is removed.
  3. An empty container is substituted, after which the fluid drain plug in the automatic transmission pan is unscrewed with a hexagon on “8”. ATF is partially drained into the container.

You need to wait until the liquid stops dripping from the hole.
  4. Torx on "27" unscrew the bolts securing the pallet, after which it is removed.
  5. The rest of the working fluid is drained. On the inner surface of the pallet there are magnets on which chips have stuck. By its quantity, the degree of wear of the box is estimated.

The pallet should be thoroughly washed from dirt
  6. The automatic transmission filter is removed from the control panel. First you need to substitute the container, as oil may leak from under it.

The position of the backstage must be remembered or noted

Working with control plate

  1. With the help of torx, 17 bolts are unscrewed, which secure the control plate. The sequence of unscrewing the bolts is strictly regulated. You need to start with the number 17 shown in the figure and end with the number 1.
Do-it-yourself oil check and change in manual transmission and automatic transmission of Volkswagen B5 cars
During assembly, the bolts will need to be tightened with a force of 8 Nm
  2. The plate is carefully removed. The internal cavity of the automatic transmission is freed from the remnants of the old ATF.
  3. The design of the plate is carefully disassembled - 5 components of which it consists are unscrewed. The fastening screws have different lengths, so it is better to arrange them so as not to confuse them later.
Do-it-yourself oil check and change in manual transmission and automatic transmission of Volkswagen B5 cars
All components must be cleaned and washed with gasoline
  4. In the plate, there is a massive plate, jets and balls are located under it. It should be removed very carefully so that the elements under it do not jump out of their nests.

After removal, the plate should be cleaned and rinsed with gasoline
  5. After cleaning the plate, it must be placed with the inner surface outward, next to the stove. Jets and balls from the plate are transferred with tweezers to the nests on the plate.

The main thing is not to confuse the location of the jets and balls

Assembly and filling of oil

  1. The control board is assembled in the reverse order.
  2. The control plate is installed in its place. All 17 bolts are tightened with a torque wrench, with the same force - 8 Nm. Now the bolts are tightened sequentially, from 1 to 17.
  3. The selector link is installed in its place. Connectors with wires are connected, the harness is fixed. A new filter is being installed.
Do-it-yourself oil check and change in manual transmission and automatic transmission of Volkswagen B5 cars
A new gasket must be installed between the plate and the pallet
  4. A pallet with a new gasket is screwed to the bottom of the plate. If there is a new washer to the drain plug, it is advisable to install it as well.
  5. The filling plug bolt is unscrewed. A tip of a hose connected to a plastic container is inserted into the hole.
Do-it-yourself oil check and change in manual transmission and automatic transmission of Volkswagen B5 cars
It is enough to connect a liter bottle to the hose
  6. The working fluid is poured until it flows from the filler hole.
  7. The engine starts, the brake pedal is pressed. The selector is briefly translated into all positions. This procedure should be repeated several times.
  8. The engine is turned off, ATF is added to the filler hole until it starts to flow out again. It is necessary to check that about 7 liters of fresh fluid have been poured into the automatic transmission.
  9. The engine starts again, the box warms up to 40-45 ° C. Then the gearbox selector is switched to the parking mode (P). In this mode, with the engine running, the remaining lubricant is added. As soon as droplets of liquid begin to fly out of the filling hole, it means that the desired level of working fluid has been reached.

Checking the level of transmission fluid in the automatic transmission

Boxes N01 and V01 do not have dipsticks for measuring the oil level. In order to check its level in the V01 automatic transmission, you should drive the car into an inspection hole. Check the oil temperature by connecting a scanner or VAGCOM. It should be in the region of 30–35 ° C, not higher. Then turn on the engine and switch the selector to position P. With the engine running, unscrew the drain plug.

If the level of the working fluid is normal, fluid should flow from the plug in thin streams. After that, you need to immediately tighten the drain plug without turning off the engine. If there is not enough lubricant, it will not pour out of the hole. In this case, you need to turn off the engine and add ATF.

Changing gear oil in the main gear of automatic transmission N01

To replace the oil in the N01 final drive, you will need 1 liter of VAG G052145S2 75-W90 API GL-5 oil or equivalent. The original oil, produced by VAG, costs from 2100 to 2300 rubles per 1 liter canister. For example, an analogue - ELFMATIC CVT 1l 194761, costs a little cheaper, from 1030 rubles. You can also pour Castrol Syntrans Transaxle 75w-90 GL 4+. To replace, you will need a syringe with a flexible hose and a set of tools.

The work is carried out in the following order:

  1. The jack raises the front left wheel when viewed in the direction of travel.

The drain plug is located behind the wall of the car body
  4. The bolt is unscrewed with a 17 hexagon, its catalog number is 091301141.
  5. The hose from the syringe is inserted into the drain hole, the used oil is pumped out with a syringe. About 1 liter of liquid should come out.
  6. The piston is removed, the syringe and hose are washed.
  7. The hose is reinserted into the drain hole. The syringe must be placed above the hole and pour fresh oil into its body.

The oil level should be at the lower edge of the hole
  9. The drain plug is twisted, the assembly takes place in the reverse order.

As you can see, simple maintenance and oil changes in gearboxes can be performed independently. Of course, the procedure for replacing ATF in an automatic box is more complicated. But that doesn't mean it can't be done. By changing the lubricant in time, you can achieve uninterrupted operation of the gearbox throughout the entire life of the car.
