A Guide to Colored Borders in Tennessee

Drivers in Tennessee must pay attention to traffic laws when they are driving, but they must also make sure they know and understand all of the state's parking laws. Although there may be slight differences in laws between cities and towns, in general they are very similar. Understanding the following laws will help you park in the correct places. If you don't, you risk getting a fine or even having your car towed.

Often, parking restrictions are indicated by colored curbs. There are three primary colors, each indicating what is allowed in that zone.

The curb painted white means you can stop in the area, but you can only stop long enough to pick up and drop off passengers. If the curb is yellow, you can stop to load and unload your vehicle. However, you will need to stay with your car. When you see a curb painted red, it means that you are not allowed to stop, stand or park on that spot under any circumstances.

Other parking rules to keep in mind

There are many places where you cannot park and there are rules you must follow when you can park your car. It is forbidden to park a vehicle in front of a public or private entrance. This will block people who need to get in and out of the driveway. It's troublesome for them and it can even be dangerous if there's an emergency.

Drivers are not allowed to park on paved or unpaved ingress and egress areas on Interstate Highways. The only exception to this rule is if the vehicle is disabled. Drivers may not park at intersections, on fire lanes, or within 15 feet of a fire hydrant. You must be at least 20 feet away from crosswalks. If you parked on a street with a fire station, you must be at least 20 feet from the entrance when parking on the same side. If you are parking on the other side, you must be at least 75 feet from the entrance.

You must be at least 30 feet from stop signs, traffic lights, and other traffic control devices, and 50 feet from railroad crossings. You cannot park on sidewalks, on bridges or in tunnels. Double parking is also not allowed in Tennessee.

It is important that you do not park in disabled spaces unless you have special signage and signs to allow you to do so. These seats are reserved for a reason, and you face a hefty fine if you break this law.

Always look for official signs and markings that will indicate if you can park in the area or not. This will help reduce the risk of getting a fine or towing the car.
