Car rental in Guatemala
To drive in Guatemala, you can use your country of origin license for up to 30 days. Those who intend to stay on vacation for a longer period will need to have an international driving permit. In order to rent a vehicle in the country, you need to be at least 25 years old and have at least a year of driving experience.
When driving, you need to have your passport, driving license, rental documents and insurance documents with you. Renting a car will make it easier to visit the places you want to visit during your vacation.
Road conditions and safety
Roads in the settlements of Guatemala are in fair condition. However, you will notice that there are several speed bumps on the roads and in many cases they are not marked. Keep this in mind so as not to hit the bottom of the car due to driving too fast. There are a number of dirt or gravel roads outside the city and can be difficult to drive on, especially during the rainy season (April to October). You must get a 4WD if you are going out of town.
Most streets in cities are lit, but as soon as you drive out of the city, there may be no lights at all on the roads. Try to avoid driving at night when you are outside of cities.
In Guatemala, you drive on the right side of the road. Seat belts are mandatory and you are not allowed to use a mobile phone while driving unless you have a hands-free system. In Guatemala, it is illegal to turn right at a red traffic light. When entering a roundabout, you must give way.
Local drivers do not always follow normal traffic rules. They may be driving too fast for the road conditions. They may not use turn signals and may not always stop at a red traffic light or stop sign.
You can often see hitchhikers on the roads. However, never stop to pick up one of these fellow travelers.

The Pan American Highway passes through Guatemala. There is a charge for traveling from Palin to Antigua. Toll rates can vary, so check the latest prices before using toll roads.
Speed limits
Speed limits in Guatemala often depend on the condition of the street as well as the amount of traffic. Try to keep up with traffic and make mistakes by moving slower. There are several police checks on the roads and they are looking for speeders.
