Operation without maintenance

Operation without maintenance Most of the car batteries currently produced are so-called maintenance-free batteries, but they also require periodic maintenance.

The maintenance-free term describes a battery that does not need to add distilled water to the electrolyte for several years. Operation without maintenanceThe loss of water from the electrolyte is associated with the release of hydrogen and oxygen during the processes of discharge and recharging (recharging) occurring during operation. Modern batteries use various solutions to prevent electrolyte depletion. One of the first was the use of a hermetically sealed housing and the construction of a positive electrode frame made of alloys with silver and calcium to limit the release of hydrogen during operation of the cell. An increased amount of electrolyte is usually added to this solution, which means that after three to five years it does not need to be topped up with distilled water.

However, each battery, both classic and one that uses the latest technologies to prevent electrolyte depletion, must be periodically subjected to certain measures to ensure its proper interaction with the vehicle's on-board network. Basically, it is about handling the battery terminals (poles) and the cable ends mounted on them, i.e. Clem. Clamps and clamps must be clean. This is especially true of the mating surfaces of these elements. At least once a year, unscrew the clamps and remove dirt from them and from the clamps. Also, frequently check that the cable lugs (clamps) are sufficiently tightened (tightened) on the battery terminals. The clips on the clips should be additionally fixed, for example, with technical vaseline or another preparation intended for this purpose.

It is also worth taking care of the cleanliness on the surface of the battery. Dirt and moisture can create current paths between battery poles, causing self-discharge.

It is worth and should also periodically check the condition of the grounding of the battery. If they are dirty or corroded, you must clean and protect them.
