Haldex transmission operation

Haldex transmission operation

The name Haldex, well known to fans of all-wheel drive vehicles, comes from the brand that made it. But now Haldex is owned by Borwarner.

What is this?

Haldex transmission operation

Haldex AWD system provides rear-wheel drive for vehicles with transverse enginetherefore, it is an add-on that can theoretically be grafted onto any self-tensioning device.

However, there are two conditions: it is necessary that the front differential is adapted to transmit power to the rear, therefore a shaft is also required. The second condition concerns the rear axle, it is necessary to have a multi-link, and not a torsion-bar axle, which, however, is found in most public cars (in the premium class it is systematically multi-link, with the exception of some manufacturers. Twisting the rear axle would cause strange behavior in the vehicle.

How does Haldex work?

4X2 mode

La Quattro transmission (transverse and Ultra) / 4Motion therefore is not permanent

Well, in the end it's pretty easy to figure out, so it's about connecting the front differential to the rear differential using a shaft. In addition, in order to be able to decouple the rear and therefore switch to 4X2, we have a Haldex transfer case that can be engaged or disengaged. This is achieved through a wet multi-plate clutch, which is much more load-bearing than a simple dry clutch.

These clutches are controlled by a computer that controls the Haldex electro-hydraulic system. Electric actuators create hydraulic pressure (using centrifugal force) in the circuit to press the discs and thus create a bridge between the front and rear axles.

Here is a diagram of the operation of the Haldex side electro-hydraulic control system.

On a longitudinal engine?

Although Haldex is not a developer, Audi has implemented a more economical model in its latest versions of the Quattro (for less powerful engines), a transfer case that replaces the Torsen and which works a bit like Haldex, which is what we call the Quattro Ultra. (Audi's Ultra badge stands for economical, like Eco2 in Renault or EfficientDynamics in BMW).

Compared to Thorsen?

The two systems have nothing in common, even if their role is to transfer/distribute power between front and rear. Torsen is a differential

constant

(here there is a permanent connection, unlike Haldex, which is disengaged), consisting of gears that prevent too much slip between the speeds of rotation of the two connected shafts (so-called limited slip differential).

Thus, due to the design of the gears, this limited slip effect is achieved, one side cannot rotate much faster than the other.

However, we could combine Haldex and Torsen in the same system - the Crown-Wheel differential that has been used since the 2010s on the Quattro.

2.2 SD4 190 channels BVA6, 185000 km / s, 2012 Prestige 5p : This is the subject of my post to share a problem that I have had for some time and which I have just resolved. This applies to the gearbox, or rather the rear transfer case and the famous pump. HaldexProblem The message transmission failure, special programs disabled appears very randomly for a year and a half, and remains constant to this day. Consequence The car will never run in 1 × 4 mode again. It will remain at 4. Three times I gave the car to the LR. They couldn't find it. Two weeks ago, since the problem was systematic, it took me 2 (three!) Days to diagnose. Result without a really good explanation or error code, he gave me a suggestion to replace the electronic box on the front gearbox. In short, MO + Box oil (3¤HT per liter ... and you need 46!) Box at 7¤HT, rating 800¤. Looking on the net, I noticed some similar problems, the cause of which was a malfunction of the pump Haldex (connected to the rear axle), is solved by simply replacing a small filter by 50¤, disassembling / cleaning the pump (there is a very small filter inside, and he does it swarm -), all in not even an hour. I call LR, explain myself and answer: “No, pumps. Haldex, we do not have a special maintenance program ... Moreover, we never change gearboxes, they are lubricated for life. " I'm dreaming. Programmed obscuration when you hold us -) You surprise me, they prefer to change, see how you quote, what kind of renovation I don't know which one, but in any case, not your problem. To summarize, LR's after-sales service is really not very good. To verify the malfunction, a small mechanic removed the connector from the pump, took a small battery and turned it (which, by the way, is not discharged) in BOTH directions. This pushed out the dirt and solved the problem, no more messages, 4x4 gearbox, special programs, everything is flawless. ... Decided for a moment ... Dirt returned to the small filter of the pump. But the failure is here, and the reason is well understood. I also have to replace other filters and oil, of course. In short, instead of 2000 it will cost me, maximum 70¤, I will do it myself too (great tutorial on the internet). Error code U0437 (under code 68) The data coming from the rear differential control module is invalid (this is definitely this code that LR saw and set the score ... laughing out loud. They didn't even run the above test) Code 1889 Oil pressure pump in the module rear differential. After several measurements, the latter remains constant. Oil pressure -> filters clogged, etc. CQFD

2.0 TDI 140 hp 4X4 2L 140CV AMBITION : Coupling Haldex very efficient indeed, but its control (electronic / hydraulic) is sometimes surprising. Especially after changing the oil in the clutch. Indeed, the system is quite sensitive / unexpected when exiting a roundabout or, for example, when turning at a very low speed; as if he had discovered the need to switch to 4X4 (4X2 shift control -> electronic 4X4… .. indeed this type of transmission is not permanent in reality) 160 km EGR valve problem. 000¤ at my expense, because my car was no longer under warranty. Attention, replacing the exhaust gas recirculation valve on the 800X4 version requires lowering the front axle (hence ¤4). It's important to know, especially if you don't need the 800X4 version.
