Ram goes electric: 1500 EVs coming in 2024 and the new electric ute is expected to compete with the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger.

Ram has revealed that a couple of electric pickups are coming soon, including this new model that will compete with the Toyota HiLux.

Ram will begin the transition to an electric future in 2024 with the launch of the 1500 EV.

The American brand teased the upcoming new model as part of parent company Stellantis' EV Day presentation to investors. The stylized silhouette of the electric-powered Ram pickup has been shown a few times, giving us an idea of what we can expect.

It will be based on the new STLA Frame platform, one of four EV architectures that Stellantis will roll out across its portfolio of 14 brands over the coming decade. The conglomerate has pledged to invest 30 billion euros ($47 billion) in the transition to electricity.

While Ram didn't provide any specific details about the Ram 1500 EV, it did lay out what we can expect. The STLA Frame platform will be equipped with an 800-volt electrical system providing a range of up to 800 km. The electric motor will have up to 330kW, which should be enough to give the electric 1500 enough performance to please current Hemi V8-loving buyers.

But the 1500 won't be the only electric pickup. The brand also briefly teased an all-new sub-1500 model that will use the STLA Large architecture instead of a body-on-frame option and could compete with the likes of the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger.

The STLA Large platform will use the same EV powertrain as the 1500, meaning it will also be capable of producing up to 330kW and have an optional 800-volt electrical system providing a potential range of up to 800km.

The STLA Large poles can be stretched up to 5.4m, occupying the same space as the 5.3m HiLux and 5.4m Ranger.

Ram plans to have electrified options by 2024 and move to a fully electric vehicle lineup by 2030.
