Range Rover Evoque D180 AWD First Edition // Adult, Not Grown

Yes, Land Rover's design was amazed to the fullest at the time, so it's clear they didn't want to get in the way of it too much. And so maybe someone will notice that this is new Evoque looks like the old one too. But the designers actually did a great job (again). Interestingly enough, anyone who recognizes the old Evoquo in terms of design immediately understands that the new one is new. If a person begins to immerse himself in details or individual moves, he notices a lot in common with the old one, but on the whole he gives a different impression. Although more mature external dimensions increase in length by only a millimeter, which means that the Evoque remains one of the most compact SUVs.... In all this impression, in fact, two main design features are to blame: a sloping roof and a clearly ascending line of the lower edge of the windows.

But despite the urban off-road look, the Evoque, which is par for the course for a Land Rover, is a true off-roader – if you think of it in an all-wheel-drive version, of course. Well, to get one, you'll have to look for the weakest engine next on offer, a 180 horsepower diesel like the one the Evoque has experienced, always paired with an automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. And, of course, the front-wheel drive (and therefore only manual shift) version is not recommended.

Why? Because it is already 180 horsepower was barely enough. And no, we are not spoiled - only the Evoque is not exactly simple. It has almost two empty tones, and this, of course, means that the movement technique is quite tense when it needs to be moved faster (for example, on the highway). The weight (which is the result of an extremely rigid, rugged off-road-adapted body but which didn't use a lot of light metals or aluminum due to price constraints) is also known in terms of consumption: similar to the Jaguar e. -The pace (to which it is closely related) Evoque does not boast record lows - but it is not very greedy, do not worry. Consumption was almost the same as the ePace, so 6,6 liters on our regular lap.

While at first you might think the masses are familiar with driving performance, they are not. Apparently, this is only noticeable on the wet road, when in combination with slightly off-road tires (Pirelli Scorpion Zero) it gives a noticeably lower specified limit of grip. Despite the same weight, the E-Pace didn't have (that many) problems with this, mainly because it had tires worn out for road use. This is just the trade-off required for field capabilities.

No, Despite the bulk, the Evoque has a really good time in corners.... Even in comfort mode, the tilt is not too much, the steering is precise for such a machine and it can help the driver (even on gravel) with a smooth, easily controlled rear slide if he wants to. And yet he is not at all interested in how the ground under the wheels: you are unlikely to find a car with such an urban look that would give the driver (and, of course, justify) such a sense of reliability and reliability. ... Where, when skidding over rubble due to a deep hole in front of the car in competing cars, the driver has already gritted his teeth and was looking for an alternative route, the Evoque simply stubbornly stomps on it. No consequences. And at this moment the driver understands why there is such a mass.

The rear axle is the same as that of the Velar (but again on weight), automatic ZF gearbox, has nine gears, rear-wheel drive disengagement (with toothed clutch) has been moved to the transmission output so that the PTO does not rotate when the vehicle is driven only by the front wheels (as was the case with its predecessor, which had a rear clutch on the differential). Under normal driving conditions, the all-wheel drive Evoque is also front-wheel drive only. Since such an Evoque has, of course, the Terrain Response 2 system, which adjusts the chassis and drive settings under the ground under the wheels, off-road driving is very undemanding, but also helps with the speed control system when descending, automatic start based on very poor grip and the ability to automatically control speed, rock climbing and similar terrain. And since the Evoque also has enough cameras to monitor its surroundings, you don't have to worry about scratching an abandoned branch or rock with it. As such, the Evoque deserves the Range Rover name and SUV reputation.

So on and off the road, the Evoque won't disappoint. What about inside? Also new to the Evoqua are (because this is a version of the First Editon series) fully digital meters with ample settings. They are well transparent, offer enough information, and since they (again due to the equipment standard) are integrated with the head-up display, the driver receives all the information he needs in a transparent and safe manner.

The rest of the infotainment system is well designed as well. The two screens on the center console work great together... The top one is for the classic infotainment system with navigation (that's Apple CarPlay and AndroidAuto, of course), while the bottom one is for air conditioning, terrain response, and settings. The solution turns out (as we have already found out in Velar) very intuitive, the arrangement of functions is logical, in some places only a slight jamming of transitions between selectors when sliding a finger is broken. This makes up for this Evoque with an excellent sound system (Meridian), as well as ample USB ports and wireless charging capabilities. We would like to have a comfortable place for small items, but it is true that there is a lot of space in the box between the seats and in the large space on the center console, under the gear lever. But while there are two cans of drink in the holder, you don't have enough space that would be immediately and transparently at hand.

Range Rover Evoque D180 AWD First Edition // Adult, Not Grown

The new Evoque has grown almost nothing compared to its predecessor, which doesn't mean the designers weren't able to get usable space. It will be large enough for family use, after all, a family of three can take it on a weekly ski trip with all their luggage and skis without the need for a roof rack. Conventionally, the four could even ride if it still had a net separating the trunk from the cockpit.... In this case, when the trunk is fully loaded to the ceiling, the digital rearview mirror also comes in handy. The camera is mounted in the roof aerial, and the image it sends in the rearview mirror is much more transparent (and wide-angle) than if you were using a classic toggle mirror. The driver quickly gets used to it, the camera is not smeared, all this is definitely worth buying.

In addition to the trunk, there is enough space in the second row (but miracles do not happen, since the Evoque is still a very compact SUV in length), and in general, despite the wedge-shaped windows, the interior gives (also because of the glass roof) pleasantly spacious, but , first of all, a rather prestigious look - and much more serious, rich and adult than its predecessor could offer.

With the new generation, the Evoque has taken a noticeable step forward, but at the same time it remains as interesting in design and compact as its predecessor. However, this is a rare combination at present.

Overall rating (442/600)

  • The new generation Evoq retains the attractive design over the previous one, but adds digitization, assistive systems, modern propulsion systems and, unfortunately, also bulk.

  • Cab and trunk (84/110)

In general, it looks like a very nice predecessor, but the shape is actually completely new - and again very pleasing to the eye.

  • Comfort (91

    / 115)

The impression of English prestige is broken only by the poor sound insulation of the diesel engine.

  • Transmission (51

    / 80)

The mass is known, and this diesel engine practically does not compete with it. However, it is an excellent four-wheel drive and transmission.

  • Driving performance (82

    / 100)

On slippery surfaces, the Evoque can be a pleasure, especially since the all-wheel drive is very good.

  • Security (92/115)

Passive safety is better than that of the brother E-Pace, and there is no shortage of auxiliary systems.

  • Economy and environment (42

    / 80)

The Range Rover brand, of course, means that the price cannot be low. If you're looking for a nearly identical but cheaper vehicle, here's the Jaguar E-Pace. But then you don't have a Range Rover, do you?

Driving pleasure: 3/5

  • If the significant mass hadn't made it clear when the driver was too fast, the Evoque would have received a fourth star for its comfortable road position.
