2022 Toyota Aygo X Revealed: Baby Kia Picanto rival gets a racy makeover, but will it come to Australia?

Toyota has adopted crossover styling cues for the new generation Aygo, dubbed the Aygo X.

Toyota has ripped the lids off its next-generation Aygo X microcar, revealing a larger and spicier version of the Sub-Yaris urban hatchback.

The new generation Aygo uses the "X" as part of its moniker to position the A-segment hatchback as a crossover, and even increased its ride height by 11mm over the outgoing model to prove its point.

This is the third generation of the Aygo to hit Europe, and it's the first time Toyota has gone it alone when it comes to model development.

Previously, Aygo was the twin of the Citroen C1 and Peugeot 107/108 of the first two generations.

It now builds on the GA-B platform of Toyota's new global architecture, which also underpins the Yaris and Yaris Cross.

But don't expect to see a perky five-door hatchback in the parking lot of your local supermarket. A spokesperson for Toyota Australia confirmed that the Aygo X is not currently under consideration for the Australian market.

If Toyota does introduce it here, it will face the dominating Kia Picanto and Fiat 500 in the shrinking microcar segment. Mitsubishi had just discontinued the Mirage after it no longer met Australian design rules.

The smallest and most affordable vehicle in Toyota's Australian lineup remains the Yaris light car with Ascent Sport petrol automatic transmission, priced from $23,740 to $20,000 before travel expenses. The Japanese brand no longer offers models under $XNUMX.

The design is inspired by the Aygo X Prologue concept unveiled earlier this year, but the production model strays away from the model it replaces, instead sporting a "winged" shape at the front with a large lower grille.

It is 125mm wider and 235mm longer than the previous Aygo, and has a 90mm longer wheelbase. The extra width allowed for more space between driver and passenger, while the cargo area increased by 60 liters to 231 liters.

Incredibly, that's more than the tiny trunk of a Corolla hatchback, which, despite belonging to the larger subcompact segment, can only swallow 217 liters in all classes except the ZR Hybrid.

The height of the car has increased by 50 mm, which also increased the fit by 55 mm.

Toyota introduced a spice-inspired two-tone color palette with names such as cardamom, chili, ginger, and juniper. You can also opt for a retractable canvas roof. Despite this, it has a quieter cabin than its predecessor.

Under the hood is a 1.0-liter three-cylinder petrol engine, and Toyota is targeting a fuel economy figure of 4.7 l/100 km.

It features a 9.0-inch HD touchscreen with connected services and over-the-air updates, while safety gear includes autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist and more.
