Extended test: Honda Civic 1.6 i-DTEC Sport

It is true, however, that the Civic still looks at first glance as if it were some kind of spaceship. The completely unusual design is completed by the rear end with a spoiler, which is also the dividing line between the two parts of the rear window on the boot lid. This oddity prevents us from looking back normally, so it's a good thing the Civic also has a rearview camera in the equipment kit that graced ours. But there is also traffic monitoring behind you, where you will also have to opt for an alternative option, a few glances in the outside rearview mirror. The aforementioned Civic feature is also the only comment that unites the opinions of most of its users.

Otherwise, the Civic impresses with its efficient turbodiesel engine. All tests lead to the conclusion that Honda is a true expert in engine building. This 1,6-liter machine is quite powerful and goes well with sports equipment. At the same time, the power is confirmed by the precision of the shift lever. Only at start-up should care be taken to add sufficient pressure to the accelerator pedal. It is also surprising his voice or the fact that we almost do not hear the operation of the engine in the passenger compartment. It can be controlled by quickly shifting to higher gear ratios, but they are adjusted accordingly. Due to the considerable range in which the Civic's engine reaches its maximum torque, we rarely find ourselves shifting into the wrong gear and the engine doesn't have enough power to propel itself forward.

In addition, the Civic is also a relatively fast car, as it can reach 207 kilometers per hour at top speed. This also means that it spins at a favorable speed at the maximum permitted speed on the motorway, which is especially well suited for long motorway journeys. In the first weeks of use, our Civic was often on long road trips on Italian roads, but almost never at their gas stations. Also, due to the large enough fuel tank and the average fuel consumption of five liters or less, jumping to Milan or Florence without refueling is quite normal. The front seats, in which the passenger and driver can really feel good, also provide comfort on long journeys. The rear seats are also quite comfortable, but conditionally, namely for passengers of average height.

There is plenty of room in the back, if passengers are replaced with luggage at all. The Civic's incredibly flexible rear seat is indeed its biggest selling point - lifting up the rear seat even gives you room to store your bike, and with the regular folding backrest, it's certainly very roomy. The list of sports equipment is very long and there are really a lot of things in it that further improve the user's well-being.

It also includes the new Honda Connect infotainment system with a seven-inch touchscreen. It includes a tri-band radio (also digital - DAB), web radio and browser, and the Aha app. Of course, in order to connect to the Internet, you must be connected via a smartphone. Also worth mentioning are two USB connectors and one HDMI. The Sport-badged Civic we tested also featured 225/45 tires on 17-inch dark alloy wheels. They contribute a lot to an interesting appearance, of course also to the fact that we can overcome corners faster per kilometer, as well as to a much firmer suspension. If the owner is willing to be patient to improve the appearance and make it less comfortable to drive on Slovenian pothole roads, that is also right. I would definitely opt for a more comfortable combination of smaller diameter rims and taller rim tires.

  • In terms of usability and roominess, the Civic sits at the top of the lower mid-range offering, but it also ranks among the most respected brands in terms of price.
