Fortunately, there are also unique hybrids that are not shy about their origin. One of them is definitely the Jeep Renegade, in fact the first Jeep model to combine the design, usability and adventurous ideology of this American brand, as well as the style and dynamics of the Italian part of the alliance, which sounds like Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. From its launch in 2014 until today, it is by far the best-selling model in the European market, so it was clear that Jeep would try to continue the success story.

Ready for 2019, it has a slightly updated look that still features the iconic seven-slot mask, only this time the “eyes” are surrounded by new LED headlights that promise 20 percent more brightness than xenon. After the new one, the taillights also glow with LED technology, a few new models have been added to the range of rims, but otherwise the Renegade remains instantly recognizable and closely tied to the Jeep brand's design leanings.

You will not notice any fundamental changes inside either. With the addition of a storage compartment and relocation of the USB connector, they have slightly improved ergonomics, while the novelty has received a fourth-generation Uconnect central infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto protocols, allowing users to choose between three screen sizes, namely 5. 7 or 8,4 inches. Otherwise, the cabin itself remains well-designed and can easily accommodate four adults. In addition to the interesting interior design, you will be amazed by the small details that symbolize the adventurous nature of the brand, from the crosses on the drink stands depicting a tin can to the iconic Willys outlines on the windshield.

The biggest novelty of the updated Renegade is hidden under the hood, and our subject has it. It is now available with a turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine, but our Renegade is powered by a more powerful 150 horsepower four-cylinder engine from the new GSE turbocharged petrol family. This third-generation 1,3-liter MultiAir engine is made almost entirely of aluminum and meets all the strictest environmental standards and significantly reduces fuel consumption. The range is enough to be described as a little more dynamic, but on the other hand, it is calmed by the rather slow operation of the DDCT automatic transmission with dual clutch. This is excellent for the mid-range of the engine, but there is little hesitation when starting off and shifting gears when driving more dynamically. Since our long-distance runner only rides on the front wheelset, and since we passed him well on the three-month test, we have not yet been able to take him out onto the field. But we will definitely topple him off the beaten track, because according to genetic data, he should be the best there. We will tell you about this and everything else in detail, but for now: Renegade, welcome to us.

evaluation

  • The Jeep Renegade is one of the few crossovers that doesn't shy away from off-roading and at the same time ignores the softening tendencies of cars. The new four-cylinder engine is a great choice, but we feel it's a better fit for a classic automatic transmission than a dual-clutch transmission.
