Extended test: Škoda Octavia 1.6 TDI (81 kW) Greenline

No, this is not another offer of a travel agency, but just an approximate calculation of fuel costs on the section of the route of the editorial office of the Auto magazine with the Škoda Octavia 1.6 TDI Greenline. That's right, our friendship with Škoda is over, and we would be lying if we said we would not miss her much. Well, especially those members of the editorial board who went abroad for various presentations, horse races, and the like, and other business trips. Of course, everyone initially thinks about fuel consumption and low road costs, but the Octavia has also proven to be the ideal car for traveling miles on other fronts as well.

Yes, it turned out great even before the trip, because it literally "eats" all the luggage. Really. Unless you just move with your family to the other end of Europe, you will find it difficult to fill the almost 600-liter trunk and you will rarely use the rear bench for luggage. There is also plenty of room for passengers. The Škoda designers used the modern Volkswagen MQB platform in the new Octavia, which allowed them to expand the wheelbase at will, while the previous model was forced to "lie" on the Golf base.

It sits well in the front, and if we add great ergonomics, it quickly becomes clear why you still haven't seen complaints about our long-distance travel reports, and now you won't. There is also plenty of room on the back bench. It turned out a little with a shorter seating part of the bench, which does not mean that it is uncomfortable to sit. The touchscreen audio information system is also commendable as it works great, is easy to operate, can play music via AUX and USB inputs, and easily connects to mobile phones.

Our Octavia was adorned with the Greenline label, which could also be translated to the "everything to spend less" line. It is clear that the already 1,6-liter turbodiesel with a capacity of 110 “horses” is quite economical in itself. However, in order for the economy to bear the Greenline label, the engine electronics were slightly modified, gear ratios were increased, tires with lower rolling resistance were added, and the airflow around them was improved with aerodynamic accessories. All this is well known! With the regular Octavia, we achieved about five liters per hundred kilometers on a normal lap, and the Octavia Greenline set a record of 3,9 liters.

What else do you need on long trips? Cruise control? It is clear that Octavia has it. Lots of storage space? He's there too. And they have a nice rubber lining to keep things from slipping on them. Some sympathetic decisions allow us to understand what Škoda thinks about everything. For example, the fuel tank door had a window scraper and a parking ticket holder above the dash.

In the three months I have spent with Octavia, it would have been difficult to point out anything that bothered us so much that we would not sit in Greenlinka at the moment and go to the other end of Europe. Well, a DSG transmission would have kept the left foot (due to the extended clutch movement) and the right lever, but that would add a few liters more fuel consumption.
