Extended test: Volkswagen Golf Variant 1.4 TSI Comfortline

Our extended test with the Volkswagen Golf (Variant 1.4 TSI Comfortline) expired too quickly. Already some of our previous reports on usability and experience have testified that this is a car that can be your great everyday helper, but it does not stand out either in terms of attractiveness (since it is a Golf) or in terms of complications in use.

Underneath the Variant’s bonnet was a 1,4-kilowatt (90 ‘horsepower’) 122-liter turbo petrol engine, which has already become history with Volkswagen’s redesign of the 1,4-liter engine for the 2015 engine year. His successor has 125 ‘horses’. Action was needed because soon all engines in the new European models will have to comply with EU 6 emissions regulations. However, I dare say that the new engine will not be significantly different from the one we tested.

Why am I writing this? Because the 1,4-liter TSI has convinced all users, especially those who set the equation Golf = TDI in their world of prejudice. As the modern engine says, it combines two things - adequate performance and economy. Of course, not always both at the same time, but in our ten-thousand-kilometer test, the Golf consumed only 100 liters of unleaded petrol per 6,9 kilometers on average. The individual stages were also convincing, especially because the appropriately chosen gear ratios in fifth and sixth gears allow for fast highway driving with a fairly economical result at the end. At an average of just over 120 kilometers per hour, the Golf Variant afforded just 7,1 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. The best result is the one from driving on the not too winding southern Croatian Adriatic highway - only 4,8 liters per 100 kilometers.

These almost completely 'diesel' properties are also benefited by the suitably large fuel tank, so that distances of more than 700 kilometers on a single charge are quite common. It is also interesting that the results of the average consumption we measured on our test circuit were very similar to what the factory stated for the average.

Our tried and tested Golf Variant is also exemplary in terms of comfort on long journeys. The suspension cuts through most of the holes and so the 'economy' rear axle installed in this Golf proved to be commendable (only if the engine has more than 150 'horsepower', the Golf has a multi-link).

Even with Comfortline equipment, the user can be completely satisfied, although some drivers have missed the addition of navigation. The driver very quickly gets used to the control buttons on the three-spoke spokes of the steering wheel. The cruise control button also helps to prevent excessive costs when paying fines and pressing the accelerator pedal too hard. Quickly adjusting the speed change is easy, as an additional button allows you to increase or decrease the set speed even in steps of ten kilometers.

Since of course the Variant also means a suitably large trunk, in fact the only serious comment if four family members are looking for a suitable means of transport for every day and travel to distant places is just one: a little too little space for longer legs in the rear seats. We have already mentioned in one of the reports that the relative Octavia turns out better here, and recently the French competition also uses modular car construction, so with a slightly longer wheelbase, the Peugeot 308 SW is also a better provider of space on the rear bench.

But Volkswagen has a different approach to this… The Golf Variant is a very convenient car even when it comes to parking - despite the exemplary spaciousness.
