Discharged battery? How to use connecting cables? The municipal police will help too (video) Winter does not refuse drivers and ... batteries. If the car does not start and there is no one nearby who wants to deal with the problem, the municipal police can come to the rescue.

Discharged battery. The city guard will help

The municipal police in Świętochłowice, like every year, offers assistance to drivers who have problems starting their car due to frost.

Bogdan Bednarek, the commander of the city guard in Sventohlovice, explained that the officers have a starting device that will temporarily replace a dead battery. Just call 986. A similar service is also available in Bielsko-Biala and other cities.

Calling security is a last resort. With jump ropes and a second vehicle, you can try to start the car on a so-called loan.

How to start the car using the jumper cables?

Running a car on a so-called loan, i.e. through connecting cables, is the most popular, emergency and quick way to resuscitate a dead battery. Just ask another driver for help. Connecting the cables is easy: we put the machines facing each other, making sure that they do not touch each other (a short circuit may occur). We turn off all the devices in our car, open the hoods, and then connect our battery to the neighboring battery with cables.

First connect the positive poles (with a red cable) and then with a black cable, or less often with a blue cable - our negative pole with the negative pole of the second car (it is better, however, to connect this cable to the so-called ground, i.e. to a metal part of your car) . Then we start a working car - it's good to add a little more gas at the beginning to increase the engine speed, and thereby send more electricity to our car. After 2-3 minutes we try to start the car. If it works, do not turn it off, but disconnect the cables in the reverse order (first minus, then plus), close the hood and leave. However, we must remember that such emergency charging only provides our battery with the electricity needed to start the engine, so if we have to drive a short distance, the car may not start again because the battery will not have time to recharge while driving.

Once the engine has been started with the jump start cables, we cannot guarantee that the battery is fully charged, so it is worth taking additional corrective action upon returning home. Autonomous operation involves checking the battery voltage with a voltmeter and using a charger if the result is undercharged.

Any operation with the battery requires caution, if only because the battery (even a discharged one) is under voltage and contains dangerous, corrosive substances (electrolyte). Hydrogen can be released during charging, so we never do it near sources of fire (hydrogen forms an explosive mixture with air), and always in a well-ventilated area.
