Regulation of fast electric bikes

Regulation of fast electric bikes

Fast electric bicycles can accelerate to 45 km / h, which is 20 more than conventional electric models. Particularly practical for long-distance travel, speed bikes are classified as mopeds and are therefore subject to separate regulations.

Speedelec, the best road bike

It is similar to a standard electric bike, but much more powerful. Indeed, if the VAE has assistance limited to 25 km / h and a motor with a maximum power of 250 W, an electric speed bike or speed bike can go faster and therefore ideal for medium distances on the road. For example, a trip at home while living in an urban or suburban environment. If you like speed and want to keep pedaling fun, a fast electric bike is the best solution. This will allow you to overtake scooters and cars in traffic jams and maintain an environmentally friendly and economical mode of transport.

Rules for speed bikes

  • Age and license: As with all mopeds, you must be at least 14 years old and have an AM category moped license to be able to ride a speed bike. The training lasts one day. This is the old BSR (Road Safety Patent).
  • Tracks: If a fast electric bike is not classified as a bicycle, it already means that you will no longer be able to use the cycle paths. No back lanes in the city center. No traffic lights for bicycles. The joy of the road, real!
  • Mandatory registration: When buying a speed bike, you need to register it with the prefecture.
  • insurance: Speeders must be insured to be allowed to drive. Some insurers offer a special package (around € 150 per year).
  • Necessary equipment: You must wear an approved helmet (classic bicycle helmet is prohibited).

Regulation of fast electric bikes

Safety first of all

In built-up areas, beware of other users, especially motorists: they do not know that you are driving faster than the average cyclist and will most likely have a reflex to cut or overtake you. So be especially vigilant in the city. And don't forget: you drive faster, which means your braking distance is longer! So increase your safety distances.

Outside populated areas, always wear a reflective vest when visibility is poor and invest in good, powerful lighting to see far and be visible to everyone.

Bonn route!
