Do-it-yourself adjustment of valve clearances on the Grant

It is immediately worth educating those owners who have 16-valve engines installed that they do not need a valve adjustment procedure. as on such models of motors there are hydraulic lifters. If you have a conventional 8-valve engine from Kalina (21114) installed on your Grant or with a lightweight piston engine, but of the same design, then you will have to adjust it every several thousand km.

The frequency of this work depends on how much the machine needs it at all. For example, there are many owners who, even after 100 km of run, have never climbed there and everything is fine. If you heard knocks under the valve cover, especially on a warm engine, or the engine does not start well, on the contrary, the reason may be the wrong gap between the washers and valve lifters.

Below is a complete list of tools that you will need to perform this maintenance item yourself:

  • Socket head for 10 with a wrench or ratchet
  • Long nose pliers or tweezers for removing old washers
  • special adjustment device (we buy for VAZ 2108)
  • screwdrivers
  • Set of probes from 0,05 to 1 mm.
  • adjusting washers (purchased after measuring the current gap)

Valve adjustment on VAZ 2110, 2114, Kalina, Granta, 2109, 2108

Well, below, see everything in the form of photo reports.

Now we will tell you in order what and how to do. So, the first step is to remove the valve cover from the engine, as well as the side cover, under which the timing drive is located. Then we expose the gas distribution mechanism according to the marks so that the marks on the flywheel with the cover and on the timing star with the protrusion on the shield coincide. Read more about this procedure here: How to set the timing by tags.

Then we raise the front right wheel of the car so that it is in a suspended state, so it will be more convenient to turn the crankshaft. So, when the marks are set, we measure the gap between the pushers and the camshaft cams:

how to measure the valve clearance on a Lada Grant

Attention: for the intake valve it should be 0,20 mm, and for the exhaust valve 0,35 mm. Of course, an error of 0,05 mm is allowed. If during measurement the gaps differ from the optimal values, it is necessary to make an adjustment. In the position when the marks are set, valves 1,2,3 and 5 are adjusted. Accordingly, turning the crankshaft one revolution, the remaining ones are regulated.

To do this, we put the device on the pins of the valve cover, as shown in the photo below, and press the stop lever on the valve so that it rests all the way down:

And at this time, we substitute a special lever that comes with the device and fix the pusher in the pressed position:

Then we take long-nose pliers and take out the adjusting washer, look at its size and, depending on whether the gap needs to be reduced or increased, we select the new washer necessary in thickness. The price of one is 30 rubles.

The rest of the valves are adjusted in the same way. And you should definitely carry out this procedure only with a cold engine, at least 25 degrees, and better even 20. If you do not follow this recommendation, then you can be mistaken and all the work will go down the drain!
