In addition, the exhaust allows you to limit the noise level of the motorcycle as much as possible... It also helps to reduce motorcycle emissions. Thus, this accessory protects the environment.

Exhaust composition

The exhaust consists of several elements, without which it will not be able to effectively fulfill its role. We distinguish between:

Quiet

The muffler, as the name suggests, is located at the exit of the tailpipe and limits the noise associated with engine combustion.

Catalyst

The catalyst is dedicated to converting pollutants into less harmful gases in order to protect the environment and the health of all.

Particulate filter (DPF)

DPF traps and removes contaminants emitted during combustion.

In addition to these basic elements, there are electrical sensors, a connecting tube and a manifold. The exhaust consists of an air duct that connects all of the aforementioned elements.

How to repair a punctured muffler?

To repair a punctured muffler, you must first locate the damaged area and then select the repair method that suits you. Indeed, there are two methods of repairing a punctured exhaust pipe: using duct tape or putty.

Identify the damaged area

You need to analyze the entire exhaust system to find a crack. Inspect the entire exhaust pipe carefully, as some cracks may be hidden. For a better analysis of the exhaust of your car, it is advisable to raise the motorcycle.

Clean up the damaged area

Once the puncture area has been identified, you should scrub the entire area with a brush or scraper. We recommend using a wire brush or other abrasive object. It is also best to avoid moisture, especially if you plan on using duct tape. It will not be able to attach properly due to moisture in the repaired area.

Electrical tape method

The tape should be glued to a sufficiently hot surface. To do this, start the motorcycle engine. When the temperature rises above 21 ° C, turn off the engine and remove the tape from the holder. Watch out for dirt that can stick to the adhesive.

After all these precautions, you can stick the tape over the damaged area. To make the repair last, consider securing the ends of the tape with threads. Finally heat the muffler to melt and harden the tape.

Putty method

Unlike duct tape, which does not require water, the area must be wetted to use the sealant. You can then apply sealant around the hole and inside the hole. After application, let the engine run for a while and then allow it to dry for at least 24 hours before driving.

However, it is important to remember that this repair is temporary. They allow you to take the time to purchase a new exhaust system. You will need to change it at some point.

When should you change the exhaust in your car?

There are no special requirements for the frequency of replacing the muffler. It is still advisable to do this regularly after walking a certain number of kilometers. Exhaust life varies on different motorcycles and cars.... In addition, certain signs can alert you and notify you that it is time to change the exhaust system of your car.

For example, if the muffler is making an unusual noise, it could be a muffler problem. Also, if your car is emitting very polluting gases, you should be concerned. The cost of replacement depends on the nature of the problem and the make of your motorcycle or vehicle.

In any case, the exhaust of your motorcycle or car is a very important element that you should not overlook.
