BMW X5 door handle repair

Today in the BMW Repair section we will try to fix a broken door handle on a BMW X5. Let's say right away - repairs can be both cheap and expensive - from an authorized dealer (6000 rubles). We are not looking for easy ways and will try to solve the problem with our own hands, because X often has problems with door mechanisms.

Causes of door handle breakage

And it’s not specifically the handle that breaks, but the silumin part (magnesium frame) inside:

  • Temperature. The handle, especially after washing, is barely warm. And it's winter outside, -20C - the mechanism just freezes. It doesn't take much force to break the frame inside. Usually it happens like this: on a cold winter day, you take your X5 out into the yard, usually you pull the handle, and something clicks suspiciously. Also, the door normally opens from the passenger compartment, but not from the outside.

Moisture gets into the mechanism itself, the parts freeze and interlock with each other, and then with a sharp movement you open the handle and everything inside breaks.
  • Wear. It turns out that this is due to the poor trajectory of the outer handle when it is opened. We move it towards us, and it should go up, because of this, the loop wears out, and then breaks.

If you go to the salon, you will be charged at least 6000 rubles. We have collected the most popular repair methods:

Independent repair method

  1. Remove decoration. Strongly. Push yourself, nothing will break.
  2. Fully open the window.
  3. Pull out the ignition key.
  4. Remove the pillow.
  5. Pull out the spark plug completely (towards the cylinder), not a small one.
  6. Turn out the corner of the soundproofing.
  7. Remove the lock cover from the end of the door.
  8. Through it we unscrew the keyhole bolt, remove the keyhole by moving against the direction of the car.
  9. Then, loosen the screw on the outer handle and remove the handle from below, and on the other side, pull it out of the bracket. At the same time, press the frame mechanism (silumin) towards you. The outer handle should be open to make it easier to pull it out of the slots.
  10. We unscrew the bolt on the outside of the door under the rubber band of the handle. Then from the inside we disconnect the cable from the frame (silumin). I also need to remove the cable lock, but I do not know where to find it there.
  11. Unscrew this silumin frame.
  12. You take out and put in a new one, lubricated with silicone or pumped up with an iron sheet 1mm in the form of a ring.

Spare caps will definitely come in handy, we recommend buying a couple of pieces.

Who does not have illuminated handles: Look for the LED on the wiring harness, with the dimensions included. You will still understand everything.

Semi-independent repair method

You yourself buy a frame made of magnesium (2000 rubles from an authorized dealer), remove the casing and go to the service. They will only accept money for work, and this is about 1000 rubles. Such repairs will cost us 3000 rubles, which is half the price.

Before you give the frame to the service, fill it with silicone so that the next time it does not break:

Watering the pen with WD-40 or other means does not help. Generally.

Or you attach your metal ear there:

Someone solves the problem like this:

A piece of iron 1 mm thick, rolled into a ring and welded at the junction. The work is difficult, but the result is long-term. And if it freezes, something else might leak somewhere. We don't know which one, but time will tell:
