Renault Mégane 2.0 16V Coupé-Cabriolet Privilege Luxury

The story of Megan, Megan, Megan's family, as much as you'd like, is now outdated; In a very popular class of cars in the lower and middle price segment, Renault offered a number of different bodies based on a single base - for different desires and tastes. And I must admit: the case "fired up."

Already the first generation offered to connoisseurs of cars with average financial capabilities: a coupe and a convertible. Now they have combined them in a recipe that has become the rule, not the exception. And the Mégane Coupé-Cabriolet is (currently) the only car of its type in its class.

The name is already clear: such a Mégane can be a coupe or a convertible. As a coupe, the name justifies itself well; it has flat front and rear windows, is low, slightly (but not too) inside the coupe and has (for a coupe) a fairly short rear. Moreover, the name "convertible" is justified: the driver and passengers can put up with driving without a roof and with a light wind, since the roof can move from its normal position.

The roof folding mechanism itself has been largely known to the modern automotive world since the spring of 1996, when the SLK from Benz was born; The electro-hydraulic system allows the hard roof and rear window to be positioned at the rear of the vehicle. This is why the rear is quite “loaded”: it must have the right space and design to swallow a two-piece roof, and still have enough room for luggage.

Renault has coped with the task; The rear end of this coupe-convertible seems to be the happiest of all such products, and the luggage space itself is decent. Inside the roof, it will be relatively modest: about 70 centimeters long, a good meter wide and (only) a quarter meter high, it will be swallowed by a classic smaller suitcase that will hold three people. -week summer vacation for two if you go there without a roof.

It will be even better if on this route you can refuse to look at the sky, because then the trunk (in its upper part) lengthens and expands by twenty centimeters, the height will be about 44 centimeters, and two more classic suitcases can be safely stored there, as well as backpack. This will allow you to refuse your baggage much less often.

Roadstering is a first-class pleasure, but with a significant limitation: there are only two seats. This Mégane is significantly more spacious as it offers four good seats with commendable space. It depends which way you're looking: if you're assuming a family would like to afford a convertible, this coupe convertible is a great option with plenty of space; but if you don't care too much about the lack of a roof and the convenience of using space in the first place, then (if you settled on this brand) look at the five-door Mégane. But then you probably don't read that file either.

Our measurements have shown that four meters and three-quarters of tall people can ride this Mégane quite confidently. If the two front passengers are taller, the knee room for the rear passengers will be reduced accordingly and eventually reach zero in the outer seating position. And at the same time there will be a stock shortage. But - you wanted a coupe or a convertible! Or both at the same time.

You may like the Mégane Coupé-Cabriolet because you like it or simply because it offers a roofless life and you are mostly happy with Renault. Experience has shown that mostly (but by no means exclusively) preppy and confident girls of all ages who currently own a previous generation Mégane coupe or convertible like it. Gentlemen who are considered serious candidates for ownership will surely notice an interesting roof shape, noticeably low glass, a dramatic rear end (especially when viewed from the side) and a slightly disguised appearance of the American "hot rod".

Open doors show no significant innovation; CC summed up the dashboard of the three-door Mégane, and the overall environment is entirely from Renault. This can be added to its good points; the interior is two-tone, with a few shades of muted colors (test car) that match the exterior, the design is still trendy, and the plastic used is mostly (in its price range) good enough to look and feel.

Particularly pleasing is the number of boxes, as well as their size, shape and installation, which really make it easy to live with this car. The only major complaint is the three switches away from the hands and eyes (turn off the electronics to control the drive wheels, turn on the cruise control, adjust the intensity of the light of the sensors) in the lower left corner, a pickpocket can also notice that it is very poor. But the latter is due solely to the shape of the body, and indeed, an acoustic parking assistance system would be very helpful.

As long as you drive a Mégane like this with a connected roof, you might be seduced by its interior, which looks like a classic coupe. But the feeling is deceiving. At a speed of about 160 kilometers per hour, gusts of wind in decibels are already so strong that they can be distracting. Also, not necessary if you like coupes and convertibles, you also like glass in the roof. This KK has it, but if the sun bothers you, you can partially shade this window with a translucent roller blind.

It deserves all the credit when it transforms into a convertible. It provides excellent wind protection: neatly and easily assembled in the trunk, you can place the windshield above the rear seats, raise the side windows and indulge in the autumn sun without any problems, even if the temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius. Even at night, in temperatures slightly above freezing, it can be pleasant with the help of good heating, only the space between the driver and the front passenger will be quite cold all the time. But if you know this, you can prepare well for it.

Hats, scarves, shawls and similar accessories will be in principle redundant, because the wind only gently caresses your hair at speeds up to 100 or more kilometers per hour, but you will still feel closer to nature - or the smelly truck in front of you. Until you catch up with him. A two-liter petrol engine is a good choice in this case, although it is also considered not the happiest product. Please, good! But that's not something to praise him.

That torque isn't one of the best is attested to by the six gears in the gearbox and the short differential that spins it in fifth gear to the chopper at 6rpm. If you chase him, he will become loud and thirsty. Feels best between 6000 and 2800 rpm; Previously, he did not develop a pleasant torque, and then did not surprise with a reserve of power. It starts up nicely and without problems, it is so friendly in the city, but the sportiness that we still remember well from the Renault 3500 19V is no longer there.

Sportiness is something that largely depends on personal criteria, but even this Mégane 2.0 16V is not exactly sporty: you can turn off the traction control, but it turns on itself when you shift into second gear, you cannot turn off the stabilization electronics. the gearbox is inaccurate, the steering wheel is inaccurate, the chassis is soft (so the car sways quickly laterally and especially longitudinally), and the engine, as mentioned, is rather anemic.

The results of course apply to a more demanding and dynamic driver, but you can still drive this Mégane very quickly. It swallows the highway easily at 190 kilometers per hour, and its safe position on the road allows fast cornering.

But whatever the technique, the main beauty lies in pleasure: it only takes about twenty seconds to be able to look at the sky overhead. A short stop at a traffic light is enough for this. ... and pressing the button.

Overall rating (323/420)

  • The whole package deserves a very good rating (or, in our opinion, very good). The four-seater hardtop convertible is currently the only one on the market in this size (and price) class and has already received congratulations, but we didn't find any major complaints.

  • Exterior (14/15)

It may not be the prettiest car on the road, but it is almost certainly the prettiest coupe convertible.

  • Interior (108/140)

He lost the most points from the coupe-convertible: therefore, limited space, comfort. Rich equipment!

  • Engine, transmission (33

    / 40)

Technically, there isn't much of a flaw in the engine and that should be enough for this car. The gearbox is average.

  • Driving performance (72

    / 95)

Insufficient steering for a more dynamic ride. Good chassis, average brake pedal feel.

  • Performance (21/35)

In practice, the engine does not work very well, but it is true that you can drive fast with this Mégane.

  • Security (34/45)

A very good overall safety package that spoils a bit due to very poor rear visibility, especially immediately behind the car.

  • Economy

The engine is also quite voracious, and the car as a whole is very interesting for the price - in addition to what it offers.
