Renault Mégane Coupe 1.6 16V Dynamic comfort

Be that as it may, this time we have to congratulate the leaders of Renault. Why he? Because they were the ones who had to say yes at the end. When you walk to the new Mégane with these thoughts in mind, it occurs to you that perhaps the front end reveals the least of the new. But it is not so. Renault ditched the increasingly "bloated" headlights that we see on new cars today, and for the Mégane they were given narrow and rather tapered headlights.

The side silhouette reveals even more novelty. This is clearly unusual, but right up to the B-pillar is actually quite classic. Only from there the lower edge of the roof bends in a wide arc towards the hind wing, and the upper edge continues in a straight line. The C-pillar formed by these two lines looks incredibly massive, and you involuntarily feel that the roof also ends with a spoiler. But this is just an optical illusion. The slightly longer roof is accentuated by the flat brushed glass of the stepped rear. The tailgate with which he first rode on Avantime.

There is a lot to talk about this, but one should not lose sight of the fact that even those who bring new forms to our lives are enthusiastic about it. In fact, we could write that it is the rear end that provides this Mégane with what we rightly expect from the successor to the Mégane Coupé, even slightly more than the front end.

But this is not the end of the news. The classic lock was replaced with an optical one. Similar to Laguna, Vel Satis and other more prestigious representatives of the Renault brand. Fuel filler cap and door. So goodbye to bad fuel smells.

As you sit inside, it convinces you that it is at least as new as the look of the Mégane. New sensors appeared on the dashboard, the main of which - speedometers and tachometers - are lined with luminous plastic. The steering wheel levers, adjustable steering wheel, center console, air vent and radio rotary switches have all been redesigned. Slightly older ones may not be happy about this, as the switches on it are quite small, so a very convenient lever on the steering wheel successfully solves this dilemma. So, with everything a dashboard has to offer, in the end, you only need slightly better materials. And not everywhere! Only on the peak of the gauges, where the plastic could be softer, and around the switches of the ventilation system, since the imitation of anything there is very unsuccessful.

Therefore, you will definitely not have problems with a trifle in the new Mégane. Well yes, if you don't forget where you put them. In front of the navigator there is a large, illuminated and in combination with air conditioning, an additional refrigerated box. There are four of them in the doorway. Two are hiding in the armrest. You will find two more, also hidden below, in front of the front seats. Extremely finished, it is also positioned between the front seats, which is convenient thanks to the shape of the handbrake lever.

Also commendable is the storage space at the bottom of the center console for small knick-knacks that, due to the fabric they are covered with, actually serve their purpose.

If you opt for the three-door Mégane, this may not be too much of a warning: open the door carefully in narrow parking lots. And also the fact that those you offer a seat in the back seat to will most likely not ride with you very often. But not for convenience. On the back of the bench sits pretty well, there are enough drawers, as well as reading lights and even headboard space, so this does not apply to the legs. But don't worry. The trunk is not designed for long trips and four adult passengers. Especially if passengers on every trip prefer to carry their wardrobe in their suitcases. You will pay tax on the rear form every time you load and unload heavier items of luggage. Lifting the load and strengthening the muscles will not escape you at this time, since you will have to lift the “load” there by 700, and back by at least 200 millimeters. Even if you avoid it anyway, you won't succeed if you blow a tire. The new Mégane is one of the few Renaults that have managed to fit a normal-sized spare tire in the bottom of the boot.

However, let's put black thoughts aside and focus on driving instead. As mentioned, the map and the Start switch are used to start the engine. The engine, which this time sounded from under the hood with VVT (Variable Valve Timinig) technology, offers an additional 5 horsepower and 4 Newton meters. But that may not matter much. Much nicer is the steering wheel, which is now more vertical than its predecessor. There will be no special problems with the working position. The trip computer gives you all the information you need, which does not save on data, but the fact that you can only walk in one direction between them is a little disturbing.

As already mentioned, the audio system can also be controlled using the lever on the steering wheel, the lights turn on automatically when the engine is started, this also applies to the dimming of the center mirror, the windshield wiper is controlled by a rain sensor - although this is not the case. work best - much more decently. its work is performed by the rear wiper, which wipes the windshield at the moment the reverse gear is engaged. All of this, of course, means that a lot of the "labor-intensive" work in the new Mégane remains with the driver.

But even more than that, the driver, and especially the passengers, will be delighted with the chassis. The suspension isn't really as soft as it used to be, which rear passengers will especially notice, but body lean in corners is much less obvious. The cornering position is long neutral due to the good lateral grip of the seats, as well as a good driving feel.

We weren't able to test what the new Mégane was capable of as we weren't allowed to because of the winter tires, which quickly began to resist higher cornering speeds, but we think their limits are very high. And if we think about the highest score that the new Mégane has received in the NCAP crash tests, then - well, more for fun than for reality - even such feats are no longer excessively risky.

I

n When you discover what the new Mégane has to offer, you will find that it goes far beyond its form. Moreover, you may be attracted by little things that are primarily for you and the passengers and therefore much less for passers-by.

Overall rating (328/420)

  • The new Mégane is already captivating with its shape. Especially in the three-door version! But the car is also good for sheet metal. Interesting interior, comfort of passengers, highest security, affordable price ... Buyers will probably not have enough.

  • Exterior (14/15)

Mégane undoubtedly deserves the highest marks for its design and the quality of the finishing is also at a high level.

  • Interior (112/140)

The front offers all the comfort you need, but that doesn't include rear seat and trunk space.

  • Engine, transmission (35

    / 40)

The engine, although not the most powerful, does its job very well, and this also applies to the gearbox.

  • Driving performance (76

    / 95)

The slightly stiffer suspension is less comfortable, but shows its advantages in cornering.

  • Performance (20/35)

Satisfactory acceleration, moderate maneuverability and decent final speed. This is what we actually expected.

  • Security (33/45)

Tests have proven themselves, but the rain sensor and transparency (C-pillar) deserve some criticism.

  • Economy

Price, warranty and loss of value are encouraging. And also fuel consumption, although our data may not show this.
