Test drive Renault Megane TCe 115: new rise

Megane is another Renault-Nissan model with a new 1,3-liter turbo engine

In fact, the current edition of Renault Megane is a car that hardly needs a particularly detailed presentation - the model is among the best-selling in many European countries. Three years ago, the model won the prestigious Car of the Year 2017 award.

The Renault-Nissan alliance's efforts to keep one of its most important products in the Old Continent in shape is impressive - the model has gradually received a wide range of options, including elegant yet highly functional sedans and station wagons.

Modern turbine unit

Now the latest highlight of Megane's product portfolio is the launch of a new generation of 1,3-litre turbocharged petrol engines equipped with direct injection and a turbocharger.

Two modifications of the new unit are a joint development of Renault-Nissan and Daimler and will be used in many models of both concerns. The TCe petrol engine boasts a range of high-tech solutions, including Mirror Bore Coating plasma coated cylinders.

This technology is also used in the Nissan GT-R engine to improve energy efficiency by reducing friction and optimizing thermal conductivity. The system of direct fuel injection into the cylinders, in turn, is already operating at a pressure of up to 250 bar. The goals of the new drive are well known and easily explained in line with the current situation in the industry - to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The 1,3-liter TCe engine is manufactured in two factories of the Franco-Japanese alliance: in Valladolid, Spain, and Sunderland, UK, by Nissan Motor United Kingdom (NMUK). It will also be manufactured at Daimler's factories in Koeled, Germany, as well as in China by Dongfeng Renault Automotive Company (DRAC) and Beijing Benz Automotive Company, Ltd (BBAC).

In real world conditions, the engine really impresses with its fuel economy potential as well as quite solid thrust with over 2000 rpm torque.

Still impressive design

Other than that, the Megane still evokes sympathy with its sleek and distinguished appearance – especially when viewed from behind. The hatchback has one of the most elegant designs in the compact segment.

The large touchscreen in the center console leaves a pretty good impression, and the fact that the infotainment system menus are fully translated into several languages is once again commendable.

On the road, the Megane TCe 115 presents a more comfortable than sporty character, but this is perfectly matched with the Frenchman's balanced and even-tempered temperament. The price level for the model in our country continues to be significant - there is no doubt that the new engines will only further strengthen the position of the model in the domestic market.
