Renault Scénic 2.0 16V Dynamic Люкс

Well, Renault has already created space in the lower middle class of cars. We are talking, of course, of the Scénic, who in 1996 shocked the perception of the automotive world at the time with the idea of a limousine van for the middle class.

The fact that this idea was completely successful is confirmed by more than 2 million customers who supported it. Most interesting, however, is that customers are not only switching from mid-range cars, but also moving away from mid-range cars. And why?

The main advantage of limousine vans of all sizes is by far the good use of space in the car, which, given the outer length of the car, is usually more affordable than in the base model limousine versions. And how did the Renault team approach the design of the new Scénica this time? Briefly and concisely, just like seven years ago on the first Scénic, with minor improvements to the original design.

Update of the first Scénica

Like seven years ago, the five-door Mégane was taken as the basis, its loft was added, and the rear bench seat was removed from the car and replaced with three individual seats. They move longitudinally, tilt and are quite easy to remove from the car (the weight of a separate seat is 15 kg). That being said, the Scénic offers a not-quite-record-breaking 5 liters of luggage space, but if you move the rear seats 430 centimeters forward, you get an extra 12 liters of luggage space, 50 liters in total. The volume is below the class average in both cases.

The middle class also flirts with the boot flexibility provided by the movable seats in the second row. The edge of the loader, raised 570 millimeters from the ground, is very low. However, Renault engineers did not stop there, and also improved the usability of the overall vehicle structure in the passenger compartment.

91 liters of storage space

Thus, they continued the story of the practical interior by arranging a row of storage boxes and shelves. They were inserted wherever there was at least a little "extra" space. Thus, they hid one relatively shallow and conditionally usable compartment under the rear left seat, and four covered compartments, similar to the old Scénic and the new Mégane, were “sunk” into the double bottom of the car under the feet of the front and rear passengers.

They also found enough space for two drawers under the front seats, large storage pockets were built into the upholstery of all four doors, and two more closed drawers were added under the armrests in the front door trim. A special feature of the new Scénic, which is also a novelty in the automotive industry in general, is definitely the console installed between the front seats. It is "equipped" with two drawers, the front of which has a volume of 12 liters and is thus the second largest storage space in the cabin, while the latter has "only" three liters of space. The largest is the 5-liter 17-liter box in front of the navigator, which is also cooled and lit, but unfortunately its contents cannot be blocked.

Another feature of the console is the possibility of its longitudinal movement, while the total stroke is exactly 304 millimeters. Eh, Renaults, could you stretch the guides just another millimeter so that the number rounds off?

Perhaps some connoisseur of the new Mégane wonders where the mechanical brake lever of the aircraft is located, whether there is now a storage console with drawers. The answer is that the developers have moved it to the dashboard using the system already known from Vel Satis and Espace. In the latter case, the task of actuating the semi-automatic (when released) mechanical brakes is taken over by the electric motor.

If, while reading the text, you decide to count on your fingers all the boxes that Scénic hides in the salon, then you probably already noticed that you have run out of fingers. However, the real picture of the usefulness of many sets of boxes turns out to be worse than it seems at first glance. Among the listed drawers for everyday use, when you want to get rid of small items such as phone, wallet, apartment keys and the like, pockets in door trims are the most popular. Most of the rest are either too big to slide and rumble in, or they are placed remotely, so storing small items in them is time-consuming and inconvenient every time.

The more convenient is the rear door or trunk lid. For an additional 49.800 SIT, you can think of a useful separate opening for the rear window and thus access the contents of the trunk faster. But be careful: when the car is dirty, there is a danger of dirt from behind on your clothes due to the relatively high edge of the opening when you step inside.

When sorting luggage by luggage, the ability to clamp the luggage rack at two heights will also help. Thus, the upper unit “only” serves to protect the luggage from prying eyes, and the second (lower) shelf unit divides the trunk into two floors, which allows you to store even more fragile items in the lower part of the trunk.

We also mentioned the last three longitudinally movable seats, but did not say that you can also adjust the tilt of their backrests, which further improves the well-being of passengers in the rear seats. But, as we have done so many times before, we are repeating now that not all gold shines. This time, the inconvenience in the Scénic test was the integrated panoramic roof window, which again raised a few centimeters of height, intended for the heads of the rear passengers.

Considering we haven't gotten our hands on the new Scénic without the panoramic roof yet, we'll only be predicting a "breakdown" based on measurements taken inside its close relative, the Mégan. However, given the similarity of the two cars and the similarity of the technical design of the panoramic roofs, we see no reason not to predict the same lack of centimeters in the Scénic, which is said to be about 5 centimeters. It is the absence of the latter that we blame for the fact that the heads of the rear passengers, if they are higher than 1 meter, run out of place, and the heads of the driver and front passenger in the front seats are always well taken care of.

The obvious difference between the front and rear seats is also due to the Scénica shape. Namely, it means that the roof tilts noticeably from the B-pillar to the rear, which undoubtedly rises a few centimeters above the heads of the rear passengers. So, in terms of space, Renault has taken care of the driver, but how is his workplace arranged?

Scenic with a touch of Espace

The main functions of the dashboard are based on the Mégane, but only the basic functions, everything else has been redesigned or taken in-house from other models. Thus, the gauges were moved up and closer to the middle of the panel, where they came very close to the appearance of the Espace counters with a digital display and a graphic image. At the same time, the lighting has also changed and is now green (Mégane's is orange).

When a driver first gets behind the wheel, he undoubtedly feels a connection with his predecessor, the first generation Scénic. Considering that one of his biggest gripes (the too flat steering wheel) was eliminated in the new Mégane, we expected the same from the Scénic, but it didn't. Well, at least not on the scale we expected and wanted. It's true that the rim is now a little more vertical than before, but it's still not enough to keep the driver from worrying about spinning.

Not the engine 2.0 16V!

Quite frankly, we don't know why anyone at Scénic opted for a XNUMX liter petrol engine. Chasing him? We doubt it because this man did not invent the limousine van to race on the highway. That he would travel fast with him? Rather already. To save money on this? It's hard to believe!

It is true that the average consumption in the 9-liter test was not disastrously high, but we are confident that the most powerful turbodiesel version of the Scénica at the same average speed will consume at least two liters less fuel than its petrol counterpart. On the other hand, the 5 1.6V engine, which has already proven itself in Mégane, might be a good buy, and this task has not yet been solved at Scénic.

As with the selected engine, the brakes are slightly above average in performance. Because of the strong braking effect of the first few kilometers, the driver needs a little getting used to, but a short braking distance is much more important for driving safety. This is not a record figure, but it still surpasses the expected result in this class of cars.

Like any limousine van

Exactly! Scénic behaves like any other limousine on the road. The high driving position improves visibility around the vehicle. Thanks to the comfortable suspension, the chassis effectively overcomes bumps, but the tall body also leans noticeably when cornering. The steering gear and optional ESP, available at an additional cost, also ensure you don't have too much fun around corners. Thus, the steering wheel has weak feedback and is responsive on average. However, in the event of a slip, the efficient ESP system decisively and reliably calms the sliding vehicle.

However, you don't even have to drive the car to discover another inconvenience to the Scénic. It is enough to slowly drive over the lying cops or drive to or from the curb for the twisting forces to twist the body, which is also evidenced by the creak of its structure.

Should I choose or not? Choose!

An answer that isn't all that surprising given Scénica's history, as it has already been taken into account by many buyers of the old Scénica! However, keep in mind that this supports the purchase of the Scenic as the vehicle itself and its design, but not its XNUMX-liter version.

Thus, the main advantages of the new Scénic lie in the even more efficient use of interior space (compared to its predecessor), and Renault is finally eliminating or alleviating some of the old grievances.

On the other hand, we have a two-liter engine that hasn't convinced us in any way. With its help, a person accumulates kilometers relatively quickly, but not so fast that a surcharge of 280.000 15 SIT would make sense. We are talking, of course, about a surcharge for 5 kilowatts of maximum power, four deciliters of engine displacement and one additional gear in the Scénica 2.0 16V transmission compared to the Scénica 1.6 16V (both with the same equipment).

The Scénic 1.9 dCi is also available, but it is already 230 tolar more expensive than the 2.0 16V and has the same number of gears in the drivetrain, 10 kilowatts less under the hood and less fuel tank vacuum. Thus, we assume that the 5 dCi engine on the same route consumes at least two liters less than the currently most powerful gasoline sibling.

So we've come to the end. We hope we've made your decision to buy a new limousine van a little easier. At least now you know that the Scénic is basically a good buy and its most powerful petrol version is unconvincing.

Overall rating (309/420)

  • The number of points scored suggests that the new Scénic is not yet a perfect car. So far, it lacked a more suitable engine, better build quality (see bugs during the test), more headroom in the rear seats, a more upright steering wheel, and a slightly larger base trunk. Everything else, like the old Scénic, “fits”.

  • Exterior (12/15)

Scénic continues the Mégan design language, but at the same time calms it down a bit. The Renaults were already better done.

  • Interior (108/140)

The rating of the cabin is reduced mainly by low ceilings due to the panoramic roof, some shortcomings in the quality of performance and the average volume of the luggage compartment.

  • Engine, transmission (31

    / 40)

Technically, the slightly above average 1.9-liter does not match the Scénica character. Apart from the XNUMX dCi engine, it is also the only one that is serially connected to a six-speed manual transmission. This one doesn't like quick shifts.

  • Driving performance (71

    / 95)

Limousine vans were never race cars. The tall body tilts noticeably in corners, and the steering mechanism does not have sufficient feedback and only responds on average.

  • Performance (20/35)

With the Scénica 2.0 16V, you can travel fast, but not compete. You can slightly improve your average maneuverability by touching the gear lever frequently.

  • Security (29/45)

We think that getting all five stars in the EuroNCAP crash test speaks volumes about the passive safety of the new Scénic. The braking distance is better than the class average.

  • Economy

The Scénic 2.0 16V isn't the best buy, but for the money you get, you get a lot of limousines. A relatively gluttonous gasoline engine will make it difficult to resell a well-selling model. Warranty promises are a good average.
