Renault Scenic 1.6 16V Expression

Last year, the Scenic was updated not only by designers, but also by engineers, and when they set themselves the goal of improving engine performance, it usually looked like this: they pick up the engine, redesign it, or now they prefer to do so. with electronics, increase its power and return to the car. This is one of the options. However, there is another one that was undertaken by Scenic engineers. Instead of the engine, they took the gearbox in their hands, found enough space in it for an additional gear and thus changed the character of the engine.

The biggest disadvantages of minivans are that they are heavier than their station wagon, that they are usually driven by more people, and that they carry an even larger front surface on top of everything. In other words: The work that small gasoline engines have to do in them can be quite brutal, even if they have enough power. The problem is that we only use this power at higher revs, which means more noise inside, higher fuel consumption and, as a result, more wear on vital engine parts.

Renault engineers have elegantly solved this problem with a new gearbox. As there are more gears, the gear ratios are shorter, which means more flexibility in the lower engine operating range and, on the other hand, reaching top speed at lower engine speeds. This is how this Scenic behaves. It's flexible enough on twisty roads that you don't have to downshift before every corner, it jumps satisfactorily when overtaking, and is decently quiet on motorways so that noise even at top speed isn't too annoying.

The Scenic with this engine already plays an important role in achieving good sales results and will obviously become even more important after the new one. The fact is that it has become more competitive or the differences between it and the same powerful model with a diesel engine are even smaller.

evaluation

  • The Scenic has long earned the title of one of the most coveted family minivans. Obviously, also because of the factory image and the high level of safety that Renault sets in its vehicles. With a six-speed transmission, which has been available with a 1,6-liter petrol engine since the update, this model will become even more popular as it now threatens equally powerful diesels in terms of performance.
