Renault Trafic 2.5 dCi (105 kVt) Quickshift

Talking about the spaciousness of such a big car is like learning again and again that Postojna Cave has a constant temperature or that you can ride on a high-altitude ski slope in winter. All this is logical. There's really plenty of room, as the Trafic can fit up to seven passengers in passenger guise, and the base 500-litre trunk can easily be expanded. Therefore, you will not have any problems when a friend or relative moves in, except that you will have to cooperate. Of course, it is desirable to master driving with rear-view mirrors, and we think not only about "reverse".

At intersections it is necessary to turn a little less so that the rear also bypasses the ominous curb, when overtaking it is advisable to provide a few meters more space, and when reversing it is good to know where the bumper ends. It's true that because of the large glass surfaces and the cut shape, even more uncomfortable drivers can spend time shopping in a crowded parking lot, but we still advise you to buy parking sensors. Test Trafic, for example, didn't have them.

However, we were safe thanks to the four airbags and ABS, and among the comfort elements we included an electric windshield, electrically adjustable mirrors, trip computer, radio with CD player (and steering wheel controls) and mechanical an air conditioner that we could work separately for the front or rear of the car.

The driver will be fine; The driving position is pleasant due to good ergonomics, only the loading position of the steering wheel interferes, which means that the longitudinal movement can be renamed to vertical movement. We exaggerate these words a little, but still not far from the truth. The driver's seat, like the passenger's, is height adjustable, but the helmsman of this large ship can also set the perfect lumbar support.

Moving to the rear of the machine is easy, but only the right sliding door allows it. Let's just note that the large size of the passenger compartment also means that the Trafic will be difficult to heat up or cool down, say, until it runs, as the ventilation system has to work well enough to heat (or cool), so the volume is large.

With a 2-litre turbodiesel, you can't go wrong. There's also plenty of power for the heavier Trafic, and idle-induced torque is maintained up to top speeds and isn't a concern, albeit smells like gas oil. We only had a few comments about the gearbox. The test Trafic was equipped with a Quickshift 5 robotic transmission, which should combine the advantages of a conventional manual transmission with the advantages of an automatic. This allows automatic as well as - at the request of the driver - manual switching in the so-called sequential mode. This means that pushing the shift lever towards the dashboard means moving up and moving down towards you. Of course, all this is controlled by powerful electronics, which does not allow the driver to make a mistake.

But then again, we're talking about a job that's so typical of (less) robotic gearboxes: the Trafic has a very quiet ride that might even be described as antiquated. Anxiety shifting, in which everything in the car sways, including the passengers, can only be limited by lightly pressing the accelerator pedal. Even if you start to release gas before overflow, do not avoid interfering longitudinal vibrations. It is even worse when starting off on slippery intersections: first, the drive wheels sink a little (front-wheel drive only, more vehicle weight and more torque), then the gearbox quickly shifts into second gear, but Trafic refuses to move due to insufficient revs. ...

In conditions of fast traffic flow in large cities, this is not only destructive, but also dangerous. Therefore, in the Auto store, we vote for a completely ordinary manual transmission, which is more suitable for the average driver. Can we praise the ease of use of the Quickshift 6 transmission? it is pleasant and precise, and at the touch of a button you can also select a preset program for driving on snow (gentle operation in a higher gear) or for towing a trailer.

In the evening, Trafic can quickly turn into a hideout. The back bench can be made into a comfortable bed (officially suitable for two adults and one child), a table can be pulled out, a hock focus on the left side, and we already have an emergency bedroom. Of course, it depends on the equipment of the version whether it also includes curtains and a stationary heater (Webasto), which can also be programmed. Definitely worth your money as we can also enjoy Trafic at night. How, let's leave it up to you!

evaluation

  • We'll be very frank: if we bought the Trafic, we would first look at the version we had in our test, as they convince in a good 2,5-liter turbodiesel engine, versatility and a pleasant feel for (too) the steering wheel. Only a robotic gearbox will remain in the showroom!

We praise and reproach
