Mazda recorded the best sales month ever for the CX-5 SUV, which is about to receive a major update.

Official new car sales figures show a shaky start to the year, with total registrations reaching 75,863 units, down 4.8% from January 2021.

A year ago, the industry was optimistic, with dealerships finally reopening after months of lockdowns and retail disruptions since the start of the pandemic, with sales up 11% compared to January 2020.

The reasons behind the slow start to 2022 are the result of ongoing semiconductor shortages and the impact of COVID-19 on global supply chains, said Tony Weber, executive director of the Federal Chamber of the Automotive Industry (FCAI).

“This is a problem affecting markets around the world. Despite this, consumer interest, demand and fundamental demand for new cars in Australia remain strong,” he said.

Toyota was again the market leader this month, although sales fell 8.8% due to a significant drop in sales of models such as the Corolla compact car (1442, -30.1%) and the RAV4 SUV (1425, -53.5%).

The T brand took top honors in individual model sales: the HiLux ute took first place with (3591, -8.2%), ahead of the soon-to-be-replaced Ford Ranger ute (3245, +4.0%). The Prado large SUV was popular last month (2566, +88.8%), ranking fifth.

Mazda had an exceptional month, finishing second overall with 9805 sales, up 15.2% from January last year. This gave it a market share of 12.9%, the highest in Australia.

Mitsubishi edged out some key competitors to take third place with 6533 sales, up 26.1%, helped by a huge rise in the Triton ute (2876, +50.7%), which became the fourth best-selling model last month.

Kia did not have a single model in the top ten, but it was consistently in fourth place overall (10, +5520%), just ahead of sister brand Hyundai (0.4, -5128%), which dropped to fifth place.

The i30 (1642, -15.9%) ranked seventh, but other key models fell in January, including the Kona (889, -18.5%) and the Tucson (775, -35.7%).

Isuzu maintained its excellent form, recording 2715 sales (+14.9%), coming in ninth place. The MU-X SUV (820, +51.6%) was the second best-selling nameplate in the sub-$70,000 large SUV segment behind the Toyota Prado, while the D-Maxute also continued its growth (1895, +4.0%). .
