Roman blinds - what to choose? Where will they work?

Among the many different types of window coverings, it is sometimes difficult to choose the most suitable one. In this text, we are considering Roman blinds. How are they going? What material to choose? Are you sure this works in all rooms?

Roman blinds are most often associated with invisible mechanisms mounted directly on the wall, but this is not the only way to assemble. Several types include the following:

  • panels in the window niche - if there is enough space above the window and below the niche, you can attach the blinds directly to the wall. Most often, a sufficiently strong double-sided tape is used for this, holding the entire structure in place;
  • frame holders - this method, similar to the above, involves gluing special parts directly to the window frame, and not to the wall above it. This saves space and is especially suitable for small windows;
  • cassette - they can be attached both to the frame and to the recess in the wall. They differ from the above methods in that the entire mechanism is enclosed in a plastic or aluminum case. This is considered by many to be the best installation method as it protects the roller shutters from damage;
  • invasive installation on the window strip - thus, intervention in the window structure is required for the installation of the roller shutter. This is because the holes required to hold the entire structure must be drilled. So in case of temporary solutions, it won't work.

In addition to the assembly method, it is also important whether you prefer a model with rails or hanging freely. The former hold the roller blind closer to the window better, although some find this less aesthetically pleasing. Roman blinds usually cover a window well, so free-hanging blinds do the job well in most cases.

Roman blinds and translucent blinds - customize them to suit your needs

Roller blinds are primarily designed to block out the sun, but everyone has different requirements for how much they want to protect themselves from it. Special blackout blinds allow you to almost completely close the window, so that not a single ray of the sun can penetrate through it. More transparent models allow you to gently darken the room while maintaining privacy.

An interesting combination of these two models is the so-called Roman Blind Duo, consisting of two separate blinds. One of them is made of thick and durable material, effectively blocking the room from light. The second layer is a thin fabric through which the sun shines through, even partially hidden behind the clouds. Thanks to the independent adjustment, you can adjust both blinds according to your current needs.

Ready made roman blinds in cotton, linen or polyester

The two most commonly chosen materials for roman blinds are cotton and polyester. The first fabric of natural origin has large folds and is much more pleasant to the touch than synthetic material. Unfortunately, it is more susceptible to dirt, so you need to be careful with stains. Polyester, although more rigid, also fits well into even stripes, and at the same time is removed and subjected to dry washing.

A less typical raw material for the manufacture of Roman blinds is, in particular, linen. This unique fabric can give a very original character to the interior, although you should also beware of dirt with it. Silk is also rare, very elegant and luxurious, but, unfortunately, expensive. Orthine is typically used to produce almost sheer blinds that only slightly restrict light.

Roman blinds - where will they look best?

The great advantage of Roman blinds is their great versatility. Thanks to the variety of fabrics used in their production, a variety of patterns and colors, they can be installed almost anywhere. For bathrooms and kitchens, i.e. places where it is easy to get wet, polyester blinds are best, and in guest rooms, children's or living rooms, blinds made of various fabrics listed above are best suited.

It is also worth choosing the right color and pattern, coordinating it as much as possible with the arrangement of this room. If you're going for minimalism or classic style, don't go for patterned fabrics in bright colors. For a room with a more sophisticated interior, it is best to choose roller blinds made of dark and dense material, which can also work as a counterbalance in a modern apartment. Rooms that draw influence from the natural world will work best with vegetal motifs, while where the industrial style prevails, simplicity will be most appropriate.

The combination of curtains and Roman blinds - is it worth investing?

Although Roman blinds look like curtains on their own, some people still decide to buy the latter. Such a set will work especially in rooms with a large area, because in small rooms it will be simply overwhelming. Modern curtains, roman blinds and curtains are a combination that should be chosen correctly so as not to give the impression of busting.

It is worth focusing primarily on moderation and simplicity. As a decoration, a simple combination of blinds and curtains is often enough and no need to focus on complex patterns or extravagant colors. However, if you want to go for them, put together a lighter and darker version of the same color. A rare good exception is the contrast of black and white. Do not choose two flashy colors or different motifs. The best combination is a patterned roller blind with a plain curtain - or vice versa.
