Rivian R1T 2022: Why Motor Trend considers it one of the best electric pickups of the year

The MotorTrend team had the opportunity to test the all-electric Rivian R1T and were delighted with the performance, even though in terms of technology it may not be up to the expectations of many users.

If you're looking for design, power, and technology, the 1 Rivian R2022T is perfect for you, as it's the first mainstream electric pickup to hit the US market, and its powerful performance makes it a bit of a sports sedan.

It's been said for a long time that truck users weren't open to electric vehicles, however it looks like the Rivian R1T is the electric truck that will make the most conservative try the technology.

In size, the R1T is a cross between a midsize pickup truck like the Chevy Colorado and a traditional half-ton car like the Ford F-150.

The Rivian R1T's shape and compact platform mimic trucks like the Honda Ridgeline and Hyundai Santa Cruz, but Rivian says it will tow 11,000 pounds and haul like a Jeep Gladiator.

One of the main features of Rivian is its power plant and suspension system. The R1T features a four-motor all-wheel drive system with height-adjustable air suspension and interconnected hydraulics for damping and roll control.

The two motors on each axle put out 415 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque at the front wheels and 420 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque at the rear wheels, and Rivian claims to hit 0-60 in 3,0 seconds.

The R1T has off-road driving modes and allows the rider to raise the suspension and loosen throttle response to varying degrees.

Unlike an internal combustion-powered SUV, the Rivian has no lower parts such as driveshafts, differentials, and exhaust pipes, just a smooth, flat platform from which the wheels and their accessories protrude. Ground clearance starts at a very comfortable 7.9 inches and increases to 14.4.

The R1T also has a built-in air compressor so you can ventilate your tires for off-road use knowing you can easily pump them onto asphalt.

All in all, this automotive gem strikes the perfect balance between the car of the future and the classic pickup truck. It tackles rough terrain, and its combination of superb handling on asphalt and off-road grace is unique and unbeatable, which is why Motor Trend considers it one of the best electric trucks of the year.
