Whether you already live in Kansas and want to customize your car, or have a car or truck that has already been modified and is moving to the state, you need to know the laws and regulations to make sure you're not violating traffic laws throughout Kansas . The following are important modification rules that you need to be aware of.

Sounds and noise

Iowa has laws regarding both sound systems and mufflers on vehicles. In addition, they also require the horns to be heard from 200 feet away, but not harsh, unreasonably loud, or whistling.

Audio system

Kansas requires vehicles to comply with strict noise laws:

  • When driving at 35 mph or less next to grass or other soft surfaces, sound levels cannot exceed 76 decibels or 80 decibels above 35 mph for vehicles under 10,000 pounds.

  • When driving at 35 mph or less near hard surfaces such as roads, the decibel level cannot exceed 78 or 82 when driving over 35 mph.

  • Vehicles over 10,000 pounds cannot produce more than 86 decibels when driving near soft surfaces at 35 mph or less and 90 decibels when driving at more than 35 mph.

  • Vehicles weighing over 10,000 pounds near hard surfaces cannot exceed 86 decibels when traveling at less than 35 mph or 92 decibels when traveling at more than 35 mph.

Muffler

  • Silencers are required and must be in proper working order.

Functions: Also check local Kansas laws to make sure you comply with any municipal noise ordinances that may be stricter than state laws.

Frame and suspension

There are no suspension, frame, or bumper height restrictions in Kansas, but cars cannot be taller than 14 feet with all modifications.

ENGINES

There are currently no engine replacement or modification regulations in Kansas, and no emissions testing is required.

Lighting and windows

Lanterns

  • Ground effect neon lighting is allowed, provided it is not red and flashing and the light tubes are not visible.

  • Vehicles, other than those used for emergency services, must not have visible red lights.

  • Flashing lights are not allowed.

  • All lights visible from the front of the vehicle must be between red and yellow.

Window tinting

  • A non-reflective tint can be applied to the top of the windshield above the AC-1 line from the manufacturer.

  • The front side, rear side and rear windows must let in more than 35% of the light.

  • Mirror or metallic tint is not allowed.

  • Red tint is not allowed.

  • Two side mirrors are required if the rear window is tinted.

Vintage/classic car modifications

Kansas provides vintage plates for vehicles over 35 years old that have original components other than those added for safety. Besides,

  • Vehicles must have an old Kansas state title.

  • Vehicles over 35 years old that have been converted to street rods are not eligible for antique plates.
