Guide to Legal Vehicle Modifications in Michigan

If you live in Michigan or plan to move to the area, you need to be aware of the state's vehicle modification laws. Compliance with these modification rules will help ensure that your vehicle is road legal while driving statewide.

Sounds and noise

The state of Michigan has regulations regarding your vehicle's sound system and muffler.

Audio system

  • 90 decibels at 35 mph or more, 86 decibels at 35 mph or less.
  • 88 decibels when stationary.

Muffler

  • Mufflers are required on all vehicles and must work properly with no holes or leaks.

  • Muffler cutouts, amplifiers, bypasses, or other modifications designed to amplify sound are not permitted.

Functions: Also check your local county laws in Michigan to make sure you comply with any municipal noise ordinances that may be stricter than state laws.

Frame and suspension

In Michigan, the following frame and suspension height regulations apply:

  • Vehicles cannot be taller than 13 feet 6 inches.

  • Vehicles may not have tie rods, rods or arms welded to the vehicle to affect steering.

  • Front lifting blocks are not allowed.

  • One-piece rear lift blocks four inches high or less are permitted.

  • Clamps longer than the stock by more than two inches are not permitted.

  • Vehicles less than 7,500 GVW have a maximum frame height of 24 inches.

  • Cars with a GVW of 7,501-10,000 have a maximum frame height of 26 inches.

  • Vehicles less than 4,501 GVW have a maximum bumper height of 26 inches.

  • Vehicles with a GVW of 4,-7,500 have a maximum bumper height of 28 inches.

  • Vehicles with a GVW of 7,501-10,000 have a maximum bumper height of 30 inches.

ENGINES

Michigan has no engine modification or replacement regulations, and no emissions testing is required.

Lighting and windows

Lanterns

  • At the same time, no more than 4 lanterns with a capacity of 300 candles can be lit on the track.

  • Side lights, reflectors and position lights at the front of the vehicle must be yellow.

  • All rear lights and reflectors must be red.

  • License plate lighting must be white.

  • Two side lamps on fenders or hoods in white or yellow are allowed.

  • One footboard is allowed on each side in orange or white.

  • Flashing or oscillating lights (other than amber emergency lights) are not permitted on passenger vehicles.

Window tinting

  • Non-reflective tinting can be applied to the top four inches of the windshield.

  • Front side, rear side and rear windows can have any darkening.

  • Side mirrors are required if the rear window is tinted.

  • Reflective tinted front and rear side windows cannot reflect more than 35%.

Vintage/classic car modifications

Michigan requires those with historic vehicles to complete an application and certification for Michigan historic plates. In addition, these vehicles cannot be used for normal daily transportation.
