Whether you live in New Hampshire or plan to move there in the near future, you need to understand laws regarding vehicle modifications. Understanding the following rules will ensure that your vehicle is road legal throughout the state.

Sounds and noise

The state of New Hampshire has regulations governing your vehicle muffler. Failure to comply may result in a fine of $100 for the first violation, $250 for the second violation, and $500 for each additional violation.

Muffler

  • Mufflers are required on all vehicles and must be in working order to limit unusually loud or excessive noise.

  • Silencer bypasses, cut-outs and similar devices are not allowed on the roadway.

  • Straight pipes are not allowed.

  • Aftermarket exhaust systems are allowed as long as they are not too loud (exact volume levels are not defined).

Functions: Also check your local county laws in New Hampshire to make sure you comply with any municipal noise ordinances that may be stricter than state laws.

Frame and suspension

New Hampshire has no frame or suspension height restrictions. However, other rules include:

  • Vehicles cannot be taller than 13 feet 6 inches.

  • The minimum bumper height for cars, SUVs and trucks is 16 inches.

  • The bumper height of passenger cars and SUVs cannot exceed 20 inches.

  • The pickup has a maximum bumper height of 30 inches.

  • Lowered suspension systems cannot allow any part of the vehicle's chassis, steering or suspension to be below the lowest part of the wheels.

ENGINES

New Hampshire does not have regulations on engine modification or replacement. However, annual safety checks are required. Emissions testing is also required for vehicles manufactured after 1996.

Lighting and windows

Lanterns

  • Two floodlights may be used, provided that the intense part of the beam does not touch the windows, mirrors or windshield of another vehicle on the roadway.

  • Three auxiliary lights are allowed.

Window tinting

  • Non-reflective tinting is allowed on the top six inches of the windshield.
  • Tinted front side windows are prohibited.
  • Rear side and rear windows must let in more than 35% of the light.
  • Side mirrors are required if the rear window is tinted.
  • Reflective tinting is not allowed.

Vintage/classic car modifications

New Hampshire provides antique plates for cars over 25 years old. However, these vehicles can only be used for public events such as parades, club events and exhibitions.
