A Guide to Legal Auto Modifications in North Carolina

North Carolina has many laws governing modified vehicles. If you live in or plan to move to the state, you will need to make sure that your modified vehicle or truck complies with these regulations in order for your vehicle to be considered statewide.
Sounds and noise
North Carolina has regulations regarding sound systems and mufflers on vehicles.
Sound systems
Drivers are not allowed to disturb the peace with an unusually loud or violent sound. If others are concerned about the volume of the radio in your car, they can file a complaint. Whether your sound system is too loud is up to the discretion of the officer and the court.
Muffler
Mufflers are required on all vehicles and must reasonably dampen engine noise. There is no provision as to how "reasonable manner" is defined by law.

Frame and suspension
North Carolina has no regulations regarding vehicle lift, frame height, and bumper height. Vehicle height must not exceed 13 feet 6 inches.
ENGINES
North Carolina requires emission testing on vehicles manufactured in 1996 and later. Safety checks are also required every year.
Lighting and windows
Lanterns
Red and blue lights, flashing or stationary, are only permitted on emergency vehicles or rescue vehicles.
Two additional light sources are allowed, such as spotlights or auxiliary lamps.
Window tinting
Non-reflective windshield tinting above the AC-1 line provided by the manufacturer is allowed.
The front side, back side and back glass must let in more than 35% of the light.
Side mirrors are required if the rear window is tinted.
Reflective tinting on the front and rear side windows cannot reflect more than 20%.
Red tint is not allowed.
Vintage/classic car modifications
North Carolina requires registration of custom, replica, and vintage vehicles.
Custom and vintage vehicles must pass inspection to confirm they meet DOT safety standards and are equipped for road use.
Vintage cars are those that are at least 35 years old.
Custom vehicles are vehicles that have been completely assembled from used or new parts (the year is listed as the year in which they were assembled).
Vehicle replicas are those that are built from a kit.
