Maine has various vehicle modification laws. If you live in the state or plan to move there, understanding the following rules will help ensure that your modified car or truck is legal on state roads.

Sounds and noise

The state of Maine has regulations governing noises from your vehicle's audio system and muffler system.

Audio system

  • The state of Maine prohibits sound systems that can be heard inside a private building or by another person that is considered unreasonable by that person or law enforcement officials.

Muffler

  • Silencers are required on all vehicles and must prevent unusual or excessive noise or noise that is louder than other similar vehicles in the same environment.

  • Muffler cutouts, bypasses, or other modifications that make the engine sound louder than factory-installed equipment are not permitted.

  • Exhaust systems must be attached to the engine block and vehicle frame and must be free of leaks.

Functions: Also check your local county laws in Maine to make sure you comply with any municipal noise ordinances that may be stricter than state laws.

Frame and suspension

Maine has frame height requirements based on Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) as well as other requirements.

  • Vehicles cannot be taller than 13 feet 6 inches.
  • GVW below 4,501 - Maximum front frame height - 24 inches, rear - 26 inches.
  • Gross vehicle weight 4,501–7,500 – Maximum front frame height is 27 inches, rear frame height is 29 inches.

  • The minimum vehicle frame height for all vehicles is 10 inches.
  • There are no other restrictions on lift kits or suspension systems.

ENGINES

Maine has no laws governing engine replacement. However, the use of nitrous oxide on the street is prohibited and Cumberland County residents must pass emission tests.

Lighting and windows

Lanterns

  • White or yellow auxiliary lights are permitted at the front and rear of the vehicle.

  • Yellow auxiliary lights are permitted on the side of the vehicle.

  • The power of a candle cannot exceed the power of standard lighting and cannot distract attention from standard lighting.

  • Lighting under the car is allowed for exhibitions and shows, but cannot be turned on when driving on public roads.

Window tinting

  • Non-reflective tint can be applied to the top five inches of the windshield or above the manufacturer's AS-1 line.

  • Front side and rear side windows must allow 100% light to pass through.

  • The tinting of the front and rear side windows must not reflect light.

Vintage/classic car modifications

Maine requires that classic or antique vehicles be registered, and at the time of registration, an antique vehicle application has been filed with the local DMV office.
