Having a street vehicle in Florida means you must follow the laws and regulations set by the state when making changes. If you live in Florida or are moving to Florida, the following information will help you understand how you are allowed to customize your vehicle.

Sounds and noise

Florida requires all vehicles to adhere to certain sound level limits from both sound systems and mufflers. This includes:

  • The noise level of vehicles manufactured between January 1, 1973 and January 1, 1975 must not exceed 86 decibels.

  • The noise level of cars manufactured after January 1, 1975 cannot exceed 83 decibels.

Functions: Also check your local Florida County laws to make sure you comply with any municipal noise ordinances that may be stricter than state laws.

Frame and suspension

Florida does not limit the frame height or suspension lift limit for vehicles provided that the bumper height does not exceed the following bumper height specifications based on gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWRs):

  • Vehicles up to 2,000 GVRW – Max front bumper height 24 inches, max rear bumper height 26 inches.

  • Vehicles 2,000– 2,999 GVW – Max front bumper height 27 inches, max rear bumper height 29 inches.

  • Vehicles 3,000-5,000 GVRW – Max front bumper height 28 inches, max rear bumper height 30 inches.

ENGINES

Florida does not specify any engine modification regulations.

Lighting and windows

Lanterns

  • Red or blue lights are only allowed for emergency vehicles.
  • Flashing lights on passenger cars are limited to turn signals only.
  • Two fog lights are allowed.
  • Two spotlights are allowed.

Window tinting

  • Non-reflective windshield tinting is allowed above the AS-1 line provided by the vehicle manufacturer.

  • Tinted front side windows must let in more than 28% of the light.

  • Rear and rear side windows must let in more than 15% of the light.

  • Reflective shades on the front and rear side windows cannot have a reflectivity of more than 25%.

  • Side mirrors are required if the rear window is tinted.

  • A decal is required on the driver's door jamb stating the permitted tint levels (provided by DMV).

Vintage/classic car modifications

Florida requires cars older than 30 years old or made after 1945 to have antique plates. To obtain these license plates, you must apply for a Street Rod, Custom Vehicle, Horseless Carriage, or Antique registration with the DMV.
