A guide to Tesla's rash and how to prevent it

Damaged, scratched and bent rims can occasionally be encountered on the road. Since the introduction of the Tesla car brand, however, mechanics like Chapel Hill Tire have noticed a surge in wheel damage and services. Why? Tesla vehicles are particularly prone to wheel damage. Our local Tesla mechanics are here to find out why Tesla wheels scratch and what you can do to protect your wheels.

What is a border rash?

When talking about Tesla wheels, drivers and mechanics often use words like "curb rash," "curb rash," and "curb." So what exactly does this mean? When a tire scratches a curb during a turn, a rough scratch can be left on the rim. In the worst case scenario, riders may find bent, damaged, or torn rim metal. Tesla cars are infamous for their "curb rash". Why? Let's take a closer look at why Tesla drives scratch so easily.

Why do Tesla wheels scratch?

Tesla wheels are made of foam in the middle, which makes them look a bit different from most cars. While the foam provides a smooth and quiet ride, drivers often find that Tesla wheel design creates the perfect storm for curb rash and rim scratches:

  • Tesla's optical illusion: Some Tesla drivers have reported that Tesla's design may present some sort of optical illusion, making the car appear narrower than it actually is. Thus, drivers are more likely to misjudge the width of turns and "kiss" the curb.
  • Thin Tires: Most rubber tires protrude beyond the rim, providing an extra layer of protection. On the other hand, the Tesla rim metal protrudes further than the rubber. This design leaves the metal rims as the first point of contact with the curbs during ill-conceived turns.
  • Curb level: Tesla is relatively low to the ground. Unlike larger cars, trucks, and SUVs that can lift the rims a little above certain hazards, this design puts the Tesla rims on par with the curb.
  • Self driving and parking: Some drivers have reported Tesla vehicles scratching rims while self-parking or self-driving.

Combined, these dangers have led to a significant increase in disc rash, especially in Tesla vehicles.

How to protect Tesla drives?

There are several options available to drivers when it comes to protecting their drives. Some drivers prefer to be more careful, trying to avoid curbs. However, it can be difficult (if not impossible) to dodge whatever the road throws at you.

For comprehensive protection, our mechanics install AlloyGator protective covers on Tesla wheels. Using a blend of heavy-duty nylon, these setups fit perfectly to your wheels, providing enhanced protection from damage. At the time of publication, AlloyGators were the only TUV and MIRA certified wheel treads on the market.

5 benefits of rim protection

  • Higher resale value: Rim damage can lower your Tesla's resale value. By preventing damage to the rim, you can avoid this costly depreciation.
  • Prevent costly damage: While rim protection is an investment, it pays off by preventing even more costly wheel and rim damage.
  • Prevention of damage to the wheel structure: In addition to preventing scratches, AlloyGator rim protection can absorb the impact of potholes and other road hazards.
  • Avoid Metal Hazards: In severe cases, scratched rims can lead to sharp jagged edges around metal wheels. This can be a safety hazard, especially if you have young children who could get hurt, cut or scratched.
  • Individual aesthetics:  The rim protector allows you to personalize your Tesla vehicle. You can match your existing rim color, Tesla body color, or choose from a variety of other color options.

Is AlloyGator rim protection available for all vehicles?

Yes, AlloyGator guards can protect almost any vehicle. However, not all vehicles require this level of protection. Most rims have built-in protection, with the tire rubber protruding further than metal rims. The AlloyGator Rim Guard is perfect for drivers with specialty rims or luxury cars with more extravagant rims.
