Interesting topic developed by InsideEVs portal. YouTuber Frosty Fingers decided to punch a hole in the rear seats of the Tesla Model 3 to have a slot for the skis. In the process, I noticed that the metal sheets (pillars) in the seats were covered with rust. It turns out that this is completely normal.

Al Steyer of Munro & Associates, the organization that dismantled the Tesla Model 3, even gave the number: About 50 percent of seat manufacturers do not use varnishing.... But this only applies to those elements that are not visible to the buyer of the car. Those visible from the outside will almost always be painted.

It is the company ordering the seats that decides whether all metal parts are varnished or only the part visible from the outside. Painting everything, of course, means higher costs.

Car owners living in humid and warm areas close to seas and oceans will experience rust most quickly.. It helps that the air conditioner is not used - it dries the air in the cabin. However, given that the metal sheet in the saddles is 1 or 1,7 millimeters thick, completely rust after 130-230 yearsso it doesn't bother the typical car owner (source).

The average corrosion rate of the sheet is about 40 micrometers in rural areas, 50 micrometers in urban areas, 100 micrometers in industrial areas and 110-120 micrometers in coastal areas. The data is based on the thickness that rust can bite over a period of one year.
